buying a 350

ok heres the deal: i have a 305 in my '84, and i was offered another fuel injected 305 for free with an engine stand for some change. my question is if i sold both the 305's how much could i possibly get, and how much could i find a used 350 at a junk yard for? My plan is to over the course of a few years completely rebuild it, now im also woundering if i should get just the 350 block or a whole engine?

Prices vary, but 350 shortblocks are typically available for $50-$200.

Unless you get an engine like an L98 or LT1, the heads will probably not be "performance" parts. So, a shortblock, onto which you install "performance" heads, is most likely the best route.

The '84 305 probably isn't worth much. If you refused $100, that would be the day two fools met. The injected 305 may be worth slightly more, assuming you're talking about a TPI engine. Most of that is the injection system, though. A TBI engine is worth about the same as your LG4.

so your saying i might be able to break even with selling the 305's for a 350 huh, thats cool. hopefully i can find something good and get a deal.

ok, so between the L98 and LT1 would you recomend i look for one before the other or are they equally worthy engines?

The L98 is something you could basically put in place of your 305. The LT1 is a complete swap requiring everything the factory used to make it run.

I'm not saying you can sell two 305's and pay for a 350 swap. The 350 you pay $50-$200 for will require a complete rebuild and different heads. You're looking at a $1500-$2000 expenditure. Then you need to completely replace the 305 exhaust, another $500-$1000.

And I didn't say you can expect to get $100 for your 305...

You might not even beable to give your 305's away. Don't expect much and take the first thing somebody offers you!

well at the very least i suppose i could just sell em at a junk yard even though i know they wont give me much for it.

i was already planning on ripping out my exaust anyway, think im going to go with the edelbrock TES headers, straight pipes to an RPM performer muffler. basically i want to go with just about everything edelbrock, RPM air-gap, RPM 64cc heads, not sure what carb or cam i want yet though
