Buying first 350 block for 91 Camaro.

I found a guy wo will sell me a 350 with a 1 piece main for $40. He said its been bored .40 over and the bearing is shot. He also recomended putting in new rings.

What codes do I look for to make sure I'm getting the L98 and not an L05 or Lt-1 and where are they located.

I am going with vortec heads & TBI.

Doesn't much matter what the block was. What you're doing to it is what matters.

Get the casting number off the block and check it against www.mortec.com .

it does matter what the block use to be.. You dont want your bought as a 350 ending up a 305, or 267 or 262 do you???

I heard it all from people selling engines. 30% of the people knows what they really have, 50% will always say it's a 350 cause thats all the really know, and about 20% will just tell you what you want to hear or thinks you want to hear

I been all over GA. buying engine cores, looking for 327, call a junkyard. Yeah we got a 327, get down there and look up the numbers and it turns out to be a 283 or something. Been through that way too many times

The originator gave L98, LO5, and LT1 as "used to be" examples. Those are all 350s. The subject line said 350.

If one can't assume a person who knows the difference between L98, LO5, and LT1 doesn't know the difference between 350, 327, 307, 305, 267 or 262, then every thread on this board is going to get very, very long. Besides, those aren't "used to be" conditions, those are are conditions - you can change the model type by what you put on a block, but with the exception of 350 & 327, you don't go from one to another with those displacements (and I don't care about 267's or 262's).

One possible reason to want to know is whether or not the mechanical fuel pump mount has been machined. However, the originator said he was going TBI, so once again perhaps I assumed too much, but I have yet to hear of a TBI set-up that used an engine-mounted mechanical fuel pump.

Dont forget the 302 in your mix! TBI uses 13psi, right? Would it be possible to get one of the high pressure mechanical pumps and use it? Or maybe is it an issue of volume?
