Chevy 400

Does anyone have any experience/info on putting a Chevy 400 block into a ThirdGen f-body? I'm new here and am considering this swap, pending its not too complicated. Any advice/info is greatly appreciated. Thanks Much.

The 400 is externally the same as every other small block. The only difference is that you'll need an externally balanced dampener and flywheel or flexplate if you're using a stock rotating assembly

I have read that the stock heads are crap on these blocks, which head/cam combo would you recommend for a street/daily? What kind of power gains could you expect from better heads/cam? Also, anybody know what stock hp/tq numbers are roughly? Thanks.

The stock heads and cam were a large part of the reason why the 400s were only rated for something like 140 HP from the factory.

the 400 has drivers side dipstick while the 3rd gen f has it on the passenger side. this may cause problems with stock exhaust manifolds.
the LF4 truck motor:
180hp 300lbs/ft

came with 882 heads.

compare the 882 with the L98 head here:

trucks are generally cammed for low rpm torque.

Did it. wrote it up.. try a search engine (actually I don't use metatags on purpose)

or go direct..

If yer gonna ask questions, make sure the answer isn't in the web-writeup first please... .. and know that I can only give first-hand info for the '92 TPI-type setup.. I'm not one of those who goes and learns everything about every system on every Fbody sorry.. its just a hobby I'm a network admin in real life. Theres tons of things to deal with, specific to your combo.. most of my mistakes are written up. Mine is a simple factory-GM camshafted hopped-up road car. nothing too crazy.. just right. If you like alot of top end power, stay away from this setup.. redlines at 5400 and the TQ comes in pretty hard very early. gotta pedal it on the street to keep from skating all over. fun wiping the roarcourse up with bimmers though :P BTW, 24 MPG Highway.. and 12.50 ET on street tires and 87 octane. not spectacular but good-nuff(tm).

Dipstick? what dipstick? no oil leaks, no oil consumption.. just measure what you drain and replace! )

Gotta get pics of the thing updated.. those are like 3 years old..

I just noticed the dyno-run pics are pretty old. Heres a newer one
