Year One's new crate

Just wondering if anyone here has had a chance to read up on Year One's new Gen 1 small block crate motor

400+ at the crank aint bad for under 3grand

just giving the heads up if anyone is shopppin arond for a crate swap

I was also curious if any one had any experience or thoughts on this engine? Seems like a pretty good price so I wasnt sure about the quality of the parts.

Only way to beat it is to find a reputable local builder and a used set of vortecs and a roller 350 block and lt4 hot cam. the output specs to be very close to this combo.

does it sound reliable or just a hodge podge of weak parts thrown together?

Well its a 4 bolt roller block and vortec heads, so I dont think there would be too much of a problem with that. My main concern would be the rotating assembly, as they do not list what parts they use. The only details I can find on the bottom end are Crankshaft- Nodular iron, Pistons- Hypereutectic, Connecting rods- Powdered metal. Can't imagine that they would be too bad though?

so, how much tuning would need to do into this motor if I was to put HSR, headers, and other goodies

would a mail order tune work good enough until I could get it somewhere to get it really tuned

Carbs arent really an option hear b/c I still have to pass visual emissions and I'd just rather have F/I anyhow

well it sounds like a great deal but doesnt really tell you what all is in it. Yearone is a really well known company so It'd surprise me that they'd lie and rip people off. Hell i'm even considering this, u cant bee 400+ hp and the warrenty for only 3k. Only thing i dont like is that it recommends 92 octane when i think the zz4 will run on 87. This wouldnt matter if gas wasnt a problem but it still sounds pretty sweet!

I had the same thought, I wouldnt think they would sell a terrible product. The price is so cheap though I would like to know what parts they use. I sent yearone an email asking for more details on the engine, so I guess Ill see what they say.

thats a damned good price. Looks like a vortec truck assembly (pretty much), with a cam and intake.

I would bet though that the bottom end is close to its limits. Not so much the crank, but the powdered rods, and pistons, probably good for another 50-75 HP, but beyond than, it gets tricky, especially with detonation.

the cam is a 218/228 grind, .488 lift of some type. Doesn't ring a bell off-hand to a common off-the-shelf, but probably is.

I called YearOne a few weeks back when I was in the market. Unfortunately I'm not anymore... . This was my definite motor until I came across a difficult money situation. The tech guy answered all my questioned and honestly sounded impressed by the deal himself. He said that YearOne does not build them, but the company that builds them, sets them up on a engine dyno, breaks the motor in, and then does a dyno run and the printout is included with the motor. I was planning on putting a Vortec Stealthram on it. I wouldn't doubt one bit that this engine would have very similar results as the IROC that they built up in GMHTP (Ram that TPI) articles...and that car ran very strong. If you read the article, the cam is pretty similar and they said on one of the runs the car didn't shift into 2nd when it was supposed to and the rpms hit 7000+ and the car was STILL pulling. Although they said they would never do it again, nor would I recommend it, that is pretty damn impressive. Anyone that gets this engine please post results. I may still consider it...IF I win the lottery...

And for those worried about shipping a crate engine, I also talked to a salesperson and from their place (Georgia) to Massachusetts they quoted me about $175. There is a possibility that the motors are drop shipped right from the place that builds them so I'm not sure, but figured I'd add that in.

No...I didn't ask about specific parts. Year One is a pretty renowned company these days, so I doubt they would put their name on a product that wouldn't be worth it. Then again, ya never know. But, for the above comment about the recommended fuel...if you spend $3000+ on a motor, are you really considering running ****ty gas through it? Treat it right. Your best bet is to call the tech department at Year One. I was on hold for a couple minutes, but the guy seemed to be well-informed and answered all my questions. I had e-mailed them and never got a response if I remember correctly, so just pick up the phone. Seeing this thread makes me kinda pissed about not bein able to get this motor...

Another alternative is this:
330HP / 350 GM Performance Parts Crate Engine Assembly :: 12486041 - SDPC

It's only rated at 330hp, but honestly, it specs up very similarly. It's got a little lower compression and less cam, but otherwise is very similar.

If you do a cam swap before you put it into the car, you should be able to get performance very similar to the Year One motor for a few hundred less. The GM motor doesn't come with an intake, but that gives you the ability to better match it to your cam choice.

i know its a long-shot but do u think the year one motor could be mated up to the L98's ECM with some prom burning and what not or is it just impossible

it won't bolt up directly. You would need the lower intake base to match vortec heads, so, either edelbrock or scoggin-dickey. once you do that, yeah, it will bolt up. minor tweaks (coil mount, and if emissions required, external EGR fabrication).
