Got questions about building motor?
Got questions about building motor?
Background: 92 Z28 currently 305 TPI
What I want: I would like a High 12 second car 12.7 - 12.9 in 1/4 mile. Driven on the street but racing would be at track. Not an every day car Just fun
Questions: Where should I get a block been looking and can't find one? Should I stay Roller or switch to hydraulic? Which way should I go Carb, HSR, Miniram? I can do most all the work except machining. Build it or buy for example a ZZ4 shortblock from GM and build from there?
Any help would greatly be appreciated

The easiest way would be to buy a preassembled engine with a carb set up rated at whatever HP you wish, I hope you are planning on running an auto trans and possibly upgrading to a better rearend also as the stock items wont hold the HP for long .. basic requirements for a 12 sec car would be around 400HP (with a TH-350 conversion and a 9" ford rear to be a reliable set up) I have seen stock 700s and 7.5/8" rears go that fast but you need to be carefull , you also would need to mod the fuel system for carb use (remove the in tank pump) and run an aftermarket pump and a line to the bottom of the tank ... there are ways to do it with FI also but it wont be as inexpensive to do and alot harder to get into the 12 sec range .. (a stock 305 TPI car is a 15-16 sec car) so you have to make up 4-5 sec somewhere ..

You have hydraulic roller now. That's a good way to go if the block is set up for it, but if the block isn't, then stick with flat tappets, most likely hydraulic especially if you stick with EFI.
Miniram is a pretty sweet set up, but carb is certainly the least expensive way to get there.
The ZZ4 shortblock is a good starting point, but don't plan on using poweradders on it.
