Started 350 build for 85 Z28

Well I finally got my block back from machine shop and am ready to start my build. I need some advice on best way to go with it. My block is a run of the mill 010 casting 2 bolt bored .30 over which should be fine for what I'm wanting. Stock crank,Already have the speed pro hyp pistons installed on the rods. I'm wanting to be around 350 hp while having good streetability and descent mpg...btw am running T5 trans. What is the best cam/heads to use to accomplish this on a limited budget? I also aready have cyclone polished intake, non cc 65,000 hei dist., and new holley 4160 vac. sec carb. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Return the intake and carb if you can. Sell them on eBay or craigslist if you can't.

Get this head/manifold kit http://www.sdpc2000.com/catalog/2172...former-RPM.htm . Might look like a lot of money, but you get a lot for it - especially the little stuff that will nickel & dime you to death. The intake you have now won't fit those heads.

Comp XE268 cam. XE274 for a little more power.

Holley 650 double pumper carb. You don't want vacuum secondaries with a manual transmission, especially a T5.

Assuming you have headers and a good exhaust, you're ready to roll with that 350+ HP.

Thanks fivekid but I really dont have that much to spend on top end. I'm really lookin to stay under $700 if possible for cam and heads. I know thats not alot but as you already know, I've gotta build another motor for sons car that has bad cam and alot of miles. What kind of perf and mileage would I be lookin at with 882 heads 2.02/160 valves and what cam would work well with these and rest of setup?

882's are large chamber (i.e., low compression), early smog-era heads. They flow poorly even with the large valves. If someone who knows what they are doing ports and flows them, they can be made decent. They'll still need to be shaved to get the chamber size down, which also requires shaving the intake. By the time you get that work done, you could afford the Vortecs. If you put them on stock or self-ported (which is better than nothing), they'll really hold back the engine.

You'd be better off finding a set of 083, 081, 416, or 601 heads and doing some magic to them. Self-ported with 1.94/1.50 (or 1.60 exhaust) valves, they'll flow much better than the 882's. You really should pick pistons and head chamber size together, since you already have pistons hung (flat tops with 4 valve reliefs, right?), you'll either need to stick with 64cc chamber heads, expand the chambers of the 58cc heads when you port them (accomplished by unshrouding the valves when porting), or use thick head gaskets (worst choice because of excessive quench spacing).

Freeing up another $500 for the Vortecs and Comp cam would get you where you want to be in one shot. I know that's easier said than done, but still true.
