350 questions and opinions

I have 2 350s available to purchase. The first one is from an 1980 Camaro. The heads have been ported and polished, and the block has been cleaned up and machined. I would need to supply a cam, intake, and carb or fuel injection. $400 gets me the engine and as much help as I can get from my buddy selling it. I'm not sure if its been rebuilt or has all the parts. My buddy says it would make around 300 hp.

The second engine is in a '93 Chevy 3/4 ton van. Its a LO5. 180,000 miles. It needs a rebuild. The price would be about the same but i might be able to get the entire van. If not, i get the engine, harness, and computer at least. I figure I could put a cam and heads on it assuming I could figure out the chip tuning.

I need to pass e-check in Ohio. The actual engine or components don't matter, what comes out the tailpipe does.

Could I yank my 305 TBI setup and put it on the 1980 engine? I'm not confident in my chip tuning. I do datalog frequently on my 305, but I've never tried to tune it.

Which engine seems like it has more potential? I'm on a very limited budget and would like to make around 300 hp just to keep up with newer vehicles. I'd prefer low to mid end torque for street use.

the 93 engine would go into your truck alot easier than the 1980 one, plus you wouldnt have to put a cam in it and all that stuff to get it goin

if your car is TBI then you wont need any fo the harness or anything like that from the van, you will jut need the engine
otherwise on the 1980 engine you wont be able to run the tbi on it unless you either swap the tbi heads onto it and get a tbi camshaft, and find a way to screw the knock sensor into the block some magical way

and so on

that wont be the end of the problems though, you will also need a 350 computer and 350 injectors and so forth too

you could probably use the van computer if its the same transmission

good lcuk

Looks like I'm going with the van engine since I'm getting the entire van for the price of removing it from the property

The engine is going into my Camaro btw, although it is tempting to put my existing 305 in the Ranger

The van has a 4L60E trans, I'm not sure how the van ECM will respond to not having a trans hooked up. I'd swap the trans over, but reverse is shot on it. I could probably dump the PROM and get the fuel tables to put into my 305 ECM.

The '93 seems better because I think the exhaust, fuel lines, throttle cables, and accessories will drop right in, I hadn't though about those issues earlier.

Looks like I need to start shopping for a rebuild kit, some vortec heads, a cam, and a new intake
