Something I forgot - Auto to Man 350

Hey all,

I'm putting a 350 TPI in next week in place of 305 TBI keeping the t5 that is currently behind the 305.

Does the 350 have a hole in the crank for the pilot bushing? Is this standard practice now to make

Yep, it should. I pilot bearing will fit in the crank where the noise of the torque converter was with the auto trans.

Thanks, I was hoping that was the case. Didn't want to pull the engine to find I needed a crank kit to get a pilot bearing hole. Way back in my day it was a crap shoot as to the crank being for a std or auto.

That was WAY back in the day indeed....

Some of the cranks produced for motors intended to be used with cast-iron Powerglide transmissions had a different size hole in the crank. Not "no" hole, just a different-sized one. I used to keep the "adapter" pilot bushing on my shelf (ONE of them, compared to a couple boxes of regular ones) just for the occasional legacy crank that I would have to work with. AFAIK these were only 265 & 283. AFAIK all 283s from about 62 or 63 up and all 327s, as well as all larger-journal motors, and all Mk4 and newer big blocks, have the regular pilot bushing hole. The last time I can recall using the "special" bushing was for an old Corvette motor I was building in about 1980. I had to wash all the dust off of IT and sand the corrosion off before I installed it. I didn't re-stock it.

I distinctly remember back in the 70s working on small blocks that had no pilot bushing hole. It may have been 283s as I worked on a few and it may also have been an issue with the odd size hole. Hell, lost touch for a while and have forgotten a lot. I also had a 67 or 68 camaro with a power glide once.

Either way, glad to see it is no longer an issue. When it works with both...

Thanks for the replys
