Exhaust Gas Recirculation....

It is an emissions-control system that recycles a small amount of exhaust gas back into the intake, to "poison" the air/fuel misture a little, to reduce peak cyl pressures, to reduce the formation of oxides of nitrogen (a major component of LA type smog).

It can also be used to attain high operating efficiency under low loads in a high-compression motor using too low a grade of fuel; it allows the use of more timing advance under these conditions (cruising, cat-pee regular gas) without causing pinging or pre-ignition. As such, it can be turned into a benefit, with modern control systems (computers).
