The alternator is located in the same place whether 305 or 350. The difference in location has to do with the year of the car, not the size of the engine. 350's weren't offered until 1987. Even then, the alternator was on the right (passenger side). It moved to the driver's side in 1988.
One way to know what engine was delivered in the car is to look at the 8th character of the VIN - if it's an "8", it had a 350. If an "F", 305.
But, that still doesn't tell you what engine you have. The only way to know for sure is to get the block casting number, which is located behind the driver's side head on top of the bell housing casting of the block. Not easy to see, but easier than the next best way - pull the head and measure the cylinder bore.
