How much will this project cost me?
How much will this project cost me?
Hi Everyone
I have an 85 iroc with a 5-speed 305 tpi. I've had my mind set on pulling everything out for a half-decent 383 tpi, new 6-speed and rear end. I don't have much confidence in my mechanical skills and will be having the work done at a reputable shop (probably Zeke's in Montreal). My chassis is ready to go and the suspension is in good repair for now but I might end up buying the rest of the Spohn catalog one of these days
I'm looking to put down 300hp to the wheels and would like to overbuild everything so I can really beat on it. I've looked at prices for premium components and come up with an approximate total of 3k for the engine (assuming i can keep my existing tpi setup), 2700 for a beefy new t-56 (550lb-ft rating) and another 2k for the rear end. So very roughly 7500 bucks of parts.
Now for my question: how much should it cost in labor, very very roughly, to assemble the engine (internals/everything) and install the tranny/rear end? I'd appreciate any input from anyone who has undertaken a similar project and had everything done by a reputable shop (ie not the cheapest).
Thanks a lot

I'd say $3000 for the shortblock is more like it. Then another $1500-$2000 for heads, cam, valvetrain, etc.
383 + TPI = Aftermarket. Like Super Ram, Stealth Ram, or Miniram.
The '85 TPI computer was pretty poor. Figure on upgrading to '86-'89 if you stay with MAF; but for a 383, it makes more sense to go with '90-'92 SD. So, more parts, harnesses, labor, etc., needed for that.
Take your parts bill and double it. That should about cover labor and incidentals.

short block machine work 1g heads worked 3gs remember heads and cam make the power. i recomend going away from the tpi to carb style intake thats port injected. its just about emmisions. you will make more power and not need to change the wiring
