New Motor, couple questions
Hey all, OSS here;
I'm about to pick up a 350 tomorrow at some point for $400. It's not a complete motor however, but I'll list some specs
It's a 1979 350 from a truck I think
-2 bolt main
-Comes with standard heads, and 1995 Vortec heads (currently installed)
-cammed (around 500 lift I/E, around 303 duration I/E and 106 lsa)
-new oil pan (GM)
-flat top pistons, 10:1 c/r
The motor was just rebuilt 300km's ago, from a local shop
The thing however, like I said it's not a complete motor. The guy is including the original cam too
The motor is missing an intake manifold, and timing set. I don't know if pulleys, waterpump or starter come with it. I've got valve covers and a carb (demon) I will put on this motor, along with headers and full non cat exhaust (2.5")
Based on what I wrote, What kind of power would you ROUGLY figure this motor to make? I'm currently running an LG4 w/ performer intake, headers, cam, carb.
Also, does this sound like ea good price for this motor? I'm picking it up tomorrow, Thanks

Okay, first principles: The stock heads and cam will be junk, so either charge to haul them off, or don't take them.
Now, if the cam really is what you describe, that thing is huge and barely streetable. Since the stock cam is a paper weight, figure on needing to buy a cam.
Since stock Vortec heads typically can't take that much lift, figure on needing to verify that no damage has occurred. Unless the seller can produce evidence that the heads have been modified to handle that much lift.
I hope by "full non cat exhaust (2.5")" you mean duals (even though I don't advocate duals for 3rd gen drivers). 2.5" single is going to restrict output (especially if you keep that mongo cam you described). 3" single is plenty adequate for power and provides much better ground clearance for the driver car.
Now, "roughly" how much power will this engine make? Let me modify the combo for you, and see what you think of this: Vortec heads, Comp XE268 cam, Edelbrock Performer RPM intake manifold, Hooker 2055HKR headers (or equivalent) and a good 3" cat-back (connected with a hollow "tubular" cat
) - about twice the HP of your LG4.
Oh, as described, $400 sounds reasonable.
