Impala/Caprice Lt1, whats the difference

Whats the big diffrence from an Lt1 from a Impala/Caprice vs the Corvette/Firebird/Camaro's Lt1's. I may have a good chance of getting one of them very cheap, so I figure whats the big difference? Also would the 700r4 tranny swap in as usual or would I have to got with a different tranny... any help would be appreciated.

best thing, get a 4L60E, and ditch the 700R4.

wait, why would they call it and lt1 if it has different heads and cam? i thought the difference was just that the cars are heavy, no engine differences though

Klortho nailed it. Heads are iron, and flow about the same as the aluminum heads, possibly slightly better depending on the year.

small cam for cruising/driveability of large car. Bump the cam up, and install better valvesprings, and you are the same as a vette or camaro, with the additional weight of the iron heads.

go with the 4l60e if you can......

They did the same thing for the L98 cars. Motor was the same, but the ones in the Iroc/GTA's had iron heads where the ones in the vette's had aluminum heads and a different cam.
