350/290HP
OK, so here is the deal.. I can get almost a brand new 350/290 HP crate motor with 400 miles on it and a year of warranty for 1500 dollars. That includes everything but the carburetter on it (intake manifold, water pump, starter motor all that stuff.). It does not come with the flywheel however, and I know its a two piece main seal, so can't I just use the flywheel off my 305? (decent condition). Do you think its worth getting this motor, or not? Are 2 piece main seal that much worse then 1? Need some advices. I am pretty displeased with my leaky 305 and looking for more power, but I am a college student with a small bank account. Thank you

Re: 350/290HP
What year is your 305? You can use yours if it's from 82-85. If yours is newer, go to the parts store and buy one for an 85 Z28 with a 305. That can be had for less than 20 dollars.
If you are carbureted, you can re-use your computer quadrajet on that engine and your computer distributor. You can get your tuning instructions from the carburetor forum and you'll get it running well.
If you are a factory TBI, you can modify your intake to fit that engine and then tune your TBI a little to get it to run well.
Time consuming, but not to expensive.

Re: 350/290HP
An addition. It is a 83 LG4 block, but if flywheel really costs so little, hell Ill just buy a new one.The engine I have in the car has been a swap motor for a v6. 350 will be very easy swap, since I already have 650 cfm edelbrock carb, and all the wiring is ready to go. I got headers y-pipe all that stuff that would bolt right up to 350... Very simple carbed set up, no computers. Also I am planing on putting moncie 4 speed in there instead of the stock V 6 transmission, I got a bell housing with fabricated brackets and everything.
BTW Thank you for the respond.

re: I need your help
Hey guys I need your help. I have a 85tpi transam and I just dropped a new 87 camaro 350 in her. I heard I need to change the fuel injectors, get a new calibrated prom chip, and a new ecm if I want to see the true performance she has.Is this true and if so where can I find these parts from a highly respected manufactuer without costing an arm and a leg. Any help is highly appreciated.
Thanks

What do you mean by a "New 87 350"?
The design of the TPI intake (base intake, runners, TB, plenum) was specifically designed around the 305. The 350 would benefit from a larger intake base , larger runners (lots of people have good luck with the Arizona Speed and Marine runners), larger Throttle Body (Stock is 48mm), your injectors from the 305 are 19lb injectors and the 350 used 21lb in 87 i believe.
BUT, the stock 350 does not require all of these upgrades. Yes, I think the best way of handling the your ECM, would be to replace your current PROM with a PROM from an 87 350 3rd gen. Back then, they used PROMs/CHIPS. They may be some other details to iron out with the ECM.
Just putting in a stock L98 350 isn't going to make much of a difference. the ratings for the 85 305 TPI, and the 87 350 were within 20-25HP of eachother, and those were new engines, who knows what the condition of your 87 350 is. If the L98 is in good condition, it may be worth adding some aftermarket bolt ons, as I mentioned. It sounds like the engine is already in, but if not that's a great time to do a cam change. Do some research on cam selection for a near stock L98. Good luck.

Re: 350/290HP
In the back of the Chevy/Corvette Trader Magazine there is a company that sells 350/350hp pan to intake, with choice of heads and cam, for $1900 with warranty and no exchange! Check that out!
