new z28 350 question

new z28 350 question

I just got a sweet 85 z28.i was told that the 305 had been removed,and 350 put in.I am a decent mechanic,but I usually work on european cars.So i wanted to know how to tell for sure that its a 350..
any info will really help

None at all. Small block chevy engines of similar vintage are externally identical (except for some rare oddballs). That's part of their appeal.

On top of the engine behind the driver side head, but that doesn't make it any easier to look at. Later blocks make it easy with a big 5.0 or 5.7 cast in raised numbers, and usually have the last 3 letters of the casting number on the sides of the block (although those have occasionally been wrong). Earlier blocks you'll need to find the whole casting number behind the head.

Often the last 3 digits of the casting number are on the side. They are the ones that are the most important, anyway.

Last weekend I helped my brother replace the engine in his '92 Suburban. Both the old engine and the rebuilt engine had "638" cast on the side. Same casting I have in the Camaro right now.
