1986 Iroc TPI 305 to TPI 383? help
Hey all, i have a 1986 Iroc currently i have a stock 305 in it with a newly installed T-56 (installed last year), i really want more motor, i have a 350 block 4 bolt one piece rear main, to set up the stroker. I would like to keep it TPI i really like the look of the system (seems alot of people do) the car is a street driven car. i also have a set of Trick flow Twisted wedge heads, 64 cc cumbustion chambers, 180cc intake runners, 2.02 intake and 1.06 exhaust, they are angle plug with cantered valves. (i know they require special pistons). i would also like to put a roller cam in. I know i can only go so far with this motor becasue of the mass air flow, the computer, and the TPI set up itself... what do you recommend i do to the mass airflow, TPI, and computer, and also cam selection. to achieve this build.
should i go with a different head? or change anything else?
i would like the engine to have a mild cam sound ( sound kinda lumpy)
Gimme your imput the more the better i really would like to start this motor before summer gets here!
thanks!

Okay, my $0.02:
I agree, TPI is a good-looking system. That's it's best quality.
TPI chokes a 305. So, what do you think will happen on a 383?
What do you do about that? The best thing is an aftermarket system like Super Ram, Stealth Ram, or Miniram. But, that takes out the #1 TPI best quality, it's looks. You could go with aftermarket base (probably still would benefit from some porting work), aftermarket runners, and ported plenum, but if you like the look of the stock runners, aftermarket are a step down. Regardless, 180cc heads are not going to be a good match with TPI unless you do go for the SR's or MR choice. The final nail is "lumpy sound" and TPI don't belong in the same sentence - you want that, go carb.
What's the most important to you, form or function? Personally, I'm a function guy, so my recommendation would be forget 1st gen SBC and go for an LT1 set-up. I only say that because you've already got the T56, which won't work (without major modification) behind an LS1. Stroke the LT1 if you like. You'll get a lot more power, driveability, fuel economy, and at least in my form-last mindset, still a decent-looking system.

i love the looks of the tpi as well so best bet to keeping it is to upgrade the hell out of it and go from there, but it will always be a stump pulling touqe monster that why i put an l98 in my lifted jeep but in your case i would defanetly swich to a speed density setup or stand alone dfi

1.so what is the largest roller cam you would recomend (comp cam part number) for the SR or MR, and also for the combo(larger intake runners, larger manifold, ported plenum.
2.also what about the mass air flow sensor? it would take alot to change to Speed density
3.TPIS makes some nice products i think, will their larger intake parts work well?
4.what about a throttle body and injectors?
5.As far as a chip goes i would prob. need a custom burn right?(seeing how im running the stock automatic chip with a standard now)
6. how do you feel about the Twisted wedge heads for this build, any other aluminum head you would reccomend, id like to keep the compression a max of 10 to 1
i really would like to keep it injected, but if a carb is the only way i guess ill have to.
Thanks.
if anyone has a similar combo and has some sound clips or some dyno sheets id like to see them.. let me know!

Re: 1986 Iroc TPI 305 to TPI 383? help
well it depends are going to be street driving this car or light strip use?.. or just a saturday night runner?... if ur gonna be running it around teh streets most real lopey cams will be too much and you will need a vaccume canister to keep your power brakes going and ac will be an absolute none you will need to get rid of it. if you want to run the lope idle but also do the occasional street run try comp cam 288ar "magnum" we installed one into a 42 pontiac rat rod with a 350 and this guy went with the stealth ram set up and bombs right after the headers CAR RAN AMAZING FOR A RAT ROD lope was too rough to pass an emissions test but not so bad that you think your car is dying if your not moving... as for the maf sensor i belive he bypassed it idk i havnt seen the car since it was brought in but if your car has a knock sensor i think that will actually cause more porblems than reprogramming the ecu for your new build engine. either way you have to have a damn good programmer to work a 383 with stock tpi if that check engine light comes on at all and your comp goes into open loop your better off with a tbi or a carb
