Possibility: 350 Vortec with 300hp

I talked to the TBI chips guy today about modding my 305 TBI and planning to spend about $3,000, without headwork, because it's too expensive for me right now. He suggested, that instead of wasting that money on a 305, and ending up with less than 200hp, that I just buy a 350 Vortec crate motor, supposedly for $1,700, it has 300hp, and with all the things needed to install it, it'd be around $2,400 total. Has anybody heard of this motor?

What do I need to buy to install it? Can I use anything from my 305?

Re: Possibility: 350 Vortec with 300hp

Just keep in mind, you can't use the Vortec throttle body, injectors & ECM.

They are a SFI system, not TBI. Which is why doc221978 suggested a TBI intake for that long block.

Not sure about the Vortecs distributor wiring compared to the stock TBI distributor connections. Might hafta reuse your stock distributor in the new long block.

I'd suggest getting a truck 350 TBI unit. Instead of just bigger injectors on the 305 TBI.

Not a bad option, but 330hp? Not gonna happen on a stock TBI.

No need to reinvent the wheel.

If you want to even touch 200rwhp, you can expect to pay over $3,000. And to see 300hp, you can expect to pay at least another couple grand.

You can buy a low mile L98 Iroc-z for the price you'd pay to run under a 15 second 1/4 in a 305 TBI.

Don't get me wrong, LO3's can be fast, but it requires a ton of money and labor.

Why not just buy a crate engine?

A total swap for me would cost under $3,000 and I'd have at the least 270 to the wheels.

Re: Possibility: 350 Vortec with 300hp

I have talked with the guys from TBI chips for my TBI RS. I am now running a 350 Vortec TBI motor that runs consistent 13.6 on just motor. I'm guessing the motor is making around 340hp at the crank. Any questions feel free to ask.

You honestly don't have a clue what you are talking about. Headers, Exhaust, bigger cam, DIY Tuning, S10 2,000 rpm converter, and a 3.73 geared rear-end will get you solidly in the 14s even with a L03. With SFCs, LCRAs, some more suspension work and sticky tires, you will likely hit the 13s even with the stock swirl ports, stock intake, and stock TBI.

I made 178 RWHP/261 RWTQ with the stock swirl ports, stock 9.3:1 compression ratio, and stock peanut roller cam. The only additions were headers, duals, 14x3 open element, and DIY tuning.

Same engine with a Production LT4 camshaft, Ported 14022601 LE9 305 Truck heads, and more tuning laid down 234 RWHP @ 5,300 and 302 RWTQ @ 3,400.
