Need help ASAP... flexplate just barely clears..can i still use it??
Okay heres the deal...just installed the engine and tranny. Nothing is hooked up yet. Anyway the old engine had a 1 piece rear seal so i knew i couldn't use the flexplate on the newer engine (2 piece seal). I used the wheel that came with the engine... Now that its in it JUST barely clears the bellhousing on the 700-r4. this wheel is about an inch bigger than the old one. I thought that was the difference between the 2 kind...but now i don't think so..
Anyway will this flexplate work since theres only about enough room to put a finish nail between the wheel and the bell housing? I know that my new starter is for this flywheel so if i end up getting a differnt size will this starter work?
Please help me! i'm fearing having to pull this apart again

I ran a 400 small block with the big flywheel ,I never really noticed the clearance, but unless you got something really wierd going on with your transmission it will work .I have ran 3 diffrent 700-r4s with this big flywheel with no problems to date. Hope I might have helped.
Also forgot to add, you will have to have the starter for the big flywheel (168 tooth) or you can change the nose on your starter. It will move the starter farther to the outside of the engine.I have had some trouble with the starter hitting the headers on several occation because they are not designed for that starter position.
I ended up having to get a minni starter because I used the big flexplate on my wifes 350 in her 82 Z28. The big starter would not fit between the headers and the block and the 305 starter hit the flexplate. I didn't know that you could change the nose cone between the 2 starters till after I had spent the $189 on the Minni starter, but hey, you live and you learn.
