New Jersey emmisions
Help, I need to know what kind of emmisions testing is done in NJ. I'd trying to do an engine swap and this is hanging me up. I'm not sure if there is a visual inspection that I will fail. Also would they check to see if my SES light works or not?

NJ have the dyno emissions. They sttick a sniffer up the tailpipe and run the car in drive with load.
I don't know about the SES light, but i assume so (disconnect it)
From what i can remember you can put any engine in from that model year and up. But i think you have to keep EFI if you have it (no TPI/TBI to carb alowed)
Keep it tuned nicely and you should be ok.

I had my '82 inspected last Spring while they temporarily went back to the stationary tailpipe sniffer test. No problem at all, even w/ my rumpity LT4-HOT cam. It blew 70ppm HC, 0.00% CO...etc. All were way below limit. There is no standard for idle smoothness or exhaust loudness fortunately.
I kinda liked the brake force test, where they drive it onto a grid of four plates and hit the brakes. The PC screen shows braking force at each wheel, very good data to have. I found out my recently-swapped disc rear wasn't generating much braking force, found out I had the wrong master cylinder and after swapping in the correct one it hit nearly 55/45 front/rear. I'd never have known otherwise, good stuff!

I heard about that swapping a newer motor in and keeping it EFI. But what is the point? If I could afford it I would, but I can't, and I need a new engine and don't feel like using the stock TBI system. I really think if I keep the engine looking stock and just put a 750 under the stock dual snorkel I'll be okay. I just was curious if they actually dug under the hood much. When you say a newer engine do you think they mean it has to have come stock in some other car or just a newer engine. If just newer then I can think of a lot of engines that'll work. Well I think I'll be getting that caprice 350 from sdpc2000 and hopefully getting the AFR 190cc heads. I'll be using a roller cam setup. I'll make another post for the legal cam size etc.

Most of those guys dont even know what they are looking at under the hood. I think they are trained to look for unplugged connectors or hoses or fittings. They WILL fail you if your SES light is on. I went in July when they were still temporarily under the old sniffer test. I failed emmisions at 1400 HC at idle. My car would have passed the dyno test because under a load it leans up. I set the advance to 0 and was putting out legal HC, had to tape up the SES light, and passed.
