350 serial number ID?

I got a 350 serial number v1025cuf casting number 3970010. Can anyone tell me what the motor came out of and what year it is and possibly what heads are on it? I am wanting to put a TPI system on it.

Re: 350 serial number ID?

Dont know all the extra stuff you want to know, but i can tell you this, that is the most common two piece rear main seal engine you can find out there. It is known to be a sound casting and it is easy to find. Made from 69-80 or so if i can remember....

Here is the casting ID info from mortec.com

3970010....302.....69....4...Z-28 Camaro
3970010....327.....69....2...Trucks and industrial
3970010....350...69-80...2 or 4

Re: 350 serial number ID?

Casting numbers mean very little. As you can see, the 010 casting was used on many different engines over many years and in many models. All they're good for is to get a rough idea about the engine.

Now suffix codes are much better. They can pinpoint what the engine actually was and what it came in.

V1025CUF

V = Flint Michigan engine plant
1025 = Oct 25
CUF = 1976 350, LM1, 165hp, 4bbl, used in an A body
CUF - 1978 350, LM1, 170hp, 4bbl, used in a B body

There's one more CUF but it's a 305 and your 010 casting has already confirmed that it's a 4" bore block which eliminates the 305. You'll need a date code to determine if the block is 1976 or 1978.

A block casting can't tell you what heads are on it. You'll have to pull a valve cover to get a head casting number. Don't expect them to be anything good. A TPI won't be a direct fit because the intake bolts are at the wrong angle. The intake holes can be redrilled to use on the older heads.

Re: 350 serial number ID?

I was told when I got the engine that is built for racing. The guy I bought it from didn't know much about it tho. He told me it was bored out but he didn't know how much lol. It has a Carter 700 carb on it and a Edelbrock performer rpm intake on it. I am gonna pull the valve covers today and get the casting number. I will post them as soon as I get them. The TPI system that I am looking at is from a corvette. Here is the info on the TPI........

Complete Unaltered and Uncut GM/Chevrolet/Pontiac Tuned Port Fuel Injection System for a 5.7L (350CID) Engine. The Upper and Lower Intake Manifolds, Runners, Fuel Rail, Injectors, and Throttle Body came from a mid-1980's Corvette with a 5.7L (350CID) Engine. The complete wiring harness, MAF Sensor, Intake Tube, Air Filter Assembly, Fuel Pump, Fuel Sending Unit, Relays, and Engine Computer came from a 1989 Pontiac GTA WS6 Trans Am with a 5.7L (350CID) Engine.

And it is going in a 1987 trans am with a turbo 350 trans. What problems mite I run into?
