Emissions and EGR, what exactly does it affect?

I live in NJ which has the dyno. I just passed it with FLYING colors, and i didn't even do any prep work! I am planning on a 305 to 350 swap. If i build my 350 to mild/medium specs, will i be able to get away with still passing emissions? I know what EGR means, but when it is actually used? In cold start up? or constantly. If its only for cold start up, i could get rid of it and i would still pass... right?

It is there to surpress the formation of oxides of nitrogen. They are formed in high pressure and temperature conditions, which describe the combustion chamber pretty well.

The purpose of the valve is to "contaminate" the air/fuel mixture to lower the combustion temperature, particularly at low throttle opening. It is disabled at cold engine temperatures, and WOT.

The dyno test looks for NOX, so it's not a good idea to eliminate the EGR valve. Also, if there is a visual inspection, you'll fail if it isn't present or hooked up.

Ok, thanks, i didn't know exactly when it was used. I just thought it was for quicker warmup when the engine is cold.
