383 Buildup

Ok, I'm 18, I've had my camaro for 3 years, I've been talking about doing this forever and I finally have a longterm job that pays well enough to actually do it. I'm thinking about buying the bare block from Ron & Ron's Engine Machine, it's a bored over 350 that has already been machined to take the stroker crank, and it's only $750. Unless anyone has heard anything bad about these guys, that's who I'll e going with. I know I have 3 choices on the cam and I'm almost certain I'm going to miniram it. AFR heads are a must(but dang their pricey). I'm going to buy a stroker kit from somewhere, anyone know anyone good? My dad and I will be building this ourselves, I'd just like to ask for any tips so I can do this right. I will be getting a chip, a new rearend, and I'll be swapping in a tremec 5 speed for the old auto. Anyone else has done a 383 build your insights are most definitely welcome. Thanks guys.

What all did they do to the block other than boring? Check machine shop prices in your area, it seems kinda high to me for just a bare block. On every 383 swap I see on this board everyone talks about clearancing the block for rods. I used a summit stroker crank and stock 5.7" rods and did not have any clearance problems with the block. I did have the rods clearanced for the cam. Anyway, most shops around here charge anywhere from $12-$15 per hole for boring. Thats usually a max of $120. Another 5 for honing with a torque plate. You should be able to pick up a 350 block or whole engine for a couple of hundred.

Another tip to help things go a little smoother is contact the companies you are buying components from and tell them your plan the expectations for this engine. They can help you choose the right cam, heads etc, for your combo. The people at comp cams were really freindly and helpful when I built my engine.
