People who have used V6 T5 behind a 305, please respond quick!
Ive talked to 2 or 3 people who have done this and they told me that you take the V6 clutch disc and V8 disc to a tranny shop and they can switch the hubs out so that the V8 disc will fit on the input shaft. I called a local tranny shop a minute ago and they had no clue how you would do this being as the disc is riveted together. Can one of you explain how this process works? I have to get this done on Saturday and need to be able to explain how to do this.
Thanks
Thanks
First off, I was told that the v8 would be too powerful in the long run for the T5. More wear and tear. Shorter life. Also, I was told that all you would need is a new bell housing. I am in the process of deciding whether to put the T5 behind my 305 or the 700r4. I want to know also, so put me on your "want to know" list.
It will work. You need a v8 bellhousing, throw out bearing, and pressure plate. Im gonna have to end up using the v6 disc since I can find anyone to swap the disc hubs for me. Eventually, Ill end up buying a V8 T5 so I can use the 10.4" disc and not the V6's 9 1/8" disc. I wish the people who told me about swaping the hubs would respond to this post.

what you want is a t-56, the 6 speed trans,
there are no "v8" t5 trans, all t5's are the same, just maybe diffrent bolt patterns. the t5 can handle a stock 305 but that about it. dont expect it too last log eithter if you do any hard racing.
i had a friend who bought a bird with a t5 that had a 400 in it and his trans lasted about 2-3 months each.
this is why gm never put a t5 in anything but a 305 car and even then you had problems, they also used the t5 in rustangs and they had the same problem, a crapy 302 has more than enough too gut a t5 trans.

All T5's are NOT the same. A V6 T5 has a 14 spline input shaft, and a V8 has a 26 spline input shaft. The gears are different ratios too. There are V6, V8 and World Class V8 T5's. As far as strength goes, the SCCA American Sedan class wich is a road racing series, uses T5's behind 350-360hp 305 motors.

kind of funny, Big Money Mike asked the question and he's the only one that knows what the hell he's talking about. Lots of people have t-5s behind beefy 350s. I've never heard of a v6 t-5 being used but if you use a v8 t-5 bellhousing I think you'll be fine. If the splines on the end of the v6-t5 aren't strong enough maybe you can swap the tail out of the tranny. I don't know if you would need to if you keep the v6 driveshaft. Might be a good idea though. Torque kills trannys, not HP. Go easy on it an it should be fine.

I had one behind my fairly stock LG4, beat on it all the time and was fine, you can have a clutch shop build a custom disc with the proper 1" 14 spline hub, the problem with the T5 isnt the input shaft but the weak case/internals, or just use an early V6 disc (tell parts store u want it for an 84 V6) they are 9 11/16 as opposed to later 9 1/8.
