377cube crate motor w/ a TPI car?
Hi Guys,
There was an article I read this month regarding crate 377 cubic inch smallbocks. These are basically 400 Chevy blocks with 350 Chevy cranks and standard 350-style heads (Sportsmans? I think) and they are supposed to make about 375 horsepower, which obviously depends on intake/exhaust, but still.
Anyway, will a standard "old style" 350 (377) bolt right up to TPI with all of the appropriate emissions items, etc? It needs to pass a sniffer test.
250-300hp just won't satisfy me, as I just traded a 2000 Z28 which was making roughly 350 crank (stock with K&N and Borla exhaust). I'm considering a 3rd gen project along with several other possible options, and I need to determine what I can do as far as engines. Truthfully my goal for the car is high 11's, so it will be highly modified.
I have no car yet, this is theoretical.
Thanks,
Michael

Compared to a 383, a 377 makes its power by reving higher. I don't have the article in front of me, but Popular Hot Rod did a comparison article last year, and although the 377 ended up making more peak power, it didn't cross over until 6000 RPM.
Do you want to try to put together a heavy breathing TPI that needs to exceed 6000 RPMs? Perhaps it can be done, but it probably isn't the best way to get a 377 making its best power.
How about an alternative - get a new World Motown 434 shortblock and put the heavy breathing TPI on it instead. Dude out here has the 415 version with 195 AFR heads, miniram, lots of other goodies, 'glide in a back-halved '88 Vette in the low 11's NA at 5800' Bandimere. Of course, this isn't a street car, but if you're running at or near sea level, you should be able to do high 11's with the 434.

Hmm... thanks for the information. Yeah, I figured the 377 is a higher revver, which is why I would prefer a 377 to a 383. While it is possible to have better low end from a 383, it is SO MUCH FUN to rev
I want a motor that peaks at 6000+ and can safely rev there over and over! 383's seem to be low-end motors, which doesn't seem nearly as fun.
I do like your idea about the bigger displacement though. I definitely want a motor that breathes up high. I'm used to an LS1, a V8 which LOVES to be revved and I've pretty much decided that is really really fun
Thanks,
Michael

377 would be a sweet motor to have but pairing it with a TPI would just pee all over your parade, it wont rev with that, now a 377 topped with a miniram should RUN, i say go for that if you have the money, if you really wanna get interesting and spin some rev's, swap in an LT1 but put the caprice etc iron head 4.3 V8 crank in it, its a 3.00 stroke crank so you'd basically have a mean lil 302 chevy
