What exactly is a stroker?

I have seen references to "stroker" engines, both here and in magazenes. What exactly is a stroker engine? What is the difference between a regular 305 or 350, and a stroker 305-350? Pros and cons? Also, didn't there used to be a forum on this board for general engine questions?

A "stroker" is where you install a crankshaft that is bigger than stock. For example, a 383 is a .030 over bored 350 block with a 3.75" crankshaft instead of the stock 3.48" crankshaft.

A little more less technical version would be that your engine's displacement is measured by the volume that the piston takes in its travel. So 350 Cubic inches means all the pistons have a total range of volume of that. To stroke an engine is to increase the amount of distance the piston travels, thereby increases the the volume. As stated above that is what is required to make a 383 stroker out of a 350. As with most mods expect it's advantages and disadvantges. However there is always that increase of power with that increase in cubic inches!

pros and cons......... there are two different ways of looking at it. and it depends on what you want. a "383 stroker" (350 w/400 crank)has pistons that travel farther than stock and slow the engine down, this makes more torque at low rpm, but isnt as strong at high rpm. now a "377" (400 w/ 350 )crank is a winding engine, it can turn alot more rpm by having the pistons travel faster but not as far.... this develops lots of top rpm and horsepower. it is a matter of what you are looking for
