Re: AutoRoc's Turbo Vortec 4200 I-6 Swap

I would turbo my H3 Hummer's 3.7 but it's a gas pig as it is! Some people are telling me it might get better mileage because of the turbo... I'd need to see more data though. It would be game on if I knew I wouldnt lose mileage.

I finished the downpipe/muffler on the IROC. Muffler is my tried n true Dynatech 4" race bullet. It dumps under the passenger seat .. Turbo+downpipe+muffler = Great exhaust note. Turbo noise went down 90%. Idle has a nice thump to it. Can't even hear it spinning with normal traffic accelleration. BOV is more prominent now. I'll install a 3" cutout for track duty, i've had one in my garage since 1999, never, used it!

I know where you can get a nice turbo manifold for the H3

If I knew that thing recorded, we'd have seen 3.9 seconds(or ran out of fuel trying...haha it'll be deep 3's once hot tires are involved and boost from a dead dig. 10 second power!

Definately fun, fast, and tame as a baby lamb cruisin' down the highway. Limequat tweaked the idle big time so it's not pouring fuel.

As always we didn't have any cameras rolling. amateur hour!!

Re: AutoRoc's Turbo Vortec 4200 I-6 Swap

Good times as usual.

Update:

414rwhp/390lbft @ 9.5psi was made at Livernois Motorsports. 3 pulls, all over 400hp and no tuning done yet. Meth kit is flowing a 6gph nozzle but tuning it is still to come, hopefully an extra 25-50hp with more timing and nailing down the A/F ratio.. It's yet to be recorded and I'm still running stock OEM sparkplugs.. Crappy cell phone videos to come..It wails like a banshee.. Thanks for sponsoring the motown picnic Livernois! Thanks Andy, sorry for the child size, kidney crusher, Corbeau seat..

That is just fabulous.

This swap really turned out fabulous for the most part. You should really be proud of what you have accomplished!

Hopefully more people will get on board!

Re: AutoRoc's Turbo Vortec 4200 I-6 Swap

Crap I thought my idea of using a 4200 in my Bird was completely unique. Oh well. lol I was really happy when I found a couple of these engines in the local junkyard. But while I was skimming through this thread I noticed something about the oil pan not matching up right and I was wondering what you did exactly. Did you just chop it a bit and change the shape?? Was it a lot of trouble? Should I try to find the 5 cyl 3.7? Any advice would be awesome. Thanks!

A 3.7 would be a LOT easier. No custom pan needed, no custom pickup needed, no need to customize the cam cover. Factory flywheels/clutches are available for the 3.7 too.

SI thought I posted my crap video here...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-jw0...ature=youtu.be

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lt5_K...ature=youtu.be

Yes the 3.7 would fit better.. Oilpan is definately better. its still a tall SOB though so you might have the throttle body touch the hood, etc. They aren't really cheap at the scrap yards but like anything, shop around... Porting, header, tune..i dont see why it couldnt make 300+hp

Last summer on 2500 mile roadtrip, my H3 Hummer with a 3.7 averaged 17.5mpg. Best tank was 18.8mpg. That was loaded with luggage, 4 people, and the A/C on in july..with giant tires on it.. Easily over 6000lbs rolling.. I was kind of impressed. Could a thirdgen get 30+?? I would hope so!

Re: AutoRoc's Turbo Vortec 4200 I-6 Swap

Track voyage! :

5 hot lapped passes in a row...not a hiccup.. 55 degree air temps. All ET's between 12.31-12.50. Bad 60fts, every pass it spun.

9.5-10psi

12.31 @ 116.5 mph was the best recorded pass. 1.99 60ft. 7.96 1/8 mile. 90+mph

One pass was 7.94 1/8 mile but 1/4 mile ET was messed up.. Probably would have been 12.25-12.28..

My intercooler pump was leaking so I drained the system, leaving water only in the bottom half of the cooler... Not being circulated..

Meth kit was spraying a 375 ml/min nozzle in front of the TB. 80/20 meth/water

Awesome. Wish you were running on your own there so we could listen to the car go down the strip. The other car drowned out the I6 Turbo noise.

Nice runs, I'm sure with a little more heat those tires will grab a little better. I really need to work on my 60' times, never been below a 2.0, in fact I may not have even hit 2.1s. Maybe I need lessons!

Re: AutoRoc's Turbo Vortec 4200 I-6 Swap

On every pass, I delayed launch in an attempt to get better audio recorded.. Haha backfired, I ran a loud car every pass it seemed. My friend wouldnt get closer to the car either..

I'm going to do a set of Toyo TQ 315/35/17 tires.. $170each roughly.. Unless Nitto NT05R's get cheaper soon... my torque converter is a bit tight too. While I get full boost immediately, the engine seems to hit a power peak about 40-60 ft out. Looser converter will help.

you need some DR's Steve!

Re: AutoRoc's Turbo Vortec 4200 I-6 Swap

Update!! Still getting 24.5mpg highway! Hoosier 315/35/17 Drag Radials. Restalled torque converter so it's 3000 on the footbrake.

A few 12.20 @ 112mph passes..boost was showing 8psi.

Turned the regulator **** 3 times resulting in a big overboosting problem..

Turned it down one turn and tried again...foot stayed in it showing 17psi all the way down track..Nothing broke! Limequat says the conservative timing + meth injection made it all possible. Only 6 degrees of timing at WOT.

11.49 @ 120+ 1.83 60ft

Best 60ft was 1.77 earlier. New converter/tires work good. Turning it down to 10psi until Fall, then ill try 15+psi in cold weather + more meth.

2 Videos below. Fifth gen probably had a screw blower, ran low 12's at 118. Stang ran 14.30's

Question, did you have any issue with the drag link/tie rods at all? It seems like it would be in the way.

Re: AutoRoc's Turbo Vortec 4200 I-6 Swap

Great question. The oilpan sits about 1/2" above the stock k member. The drag link is about 1/4" below the oilpan. The tierods nearly touch the edges of the oilpan.. Those parts also rise/fall a little when you steer left/right. Drivers tierod is closest to touching. I actually thought i'd have to drop the draglink down lower somehow, like lifted trucks do.. Fortunately I milled the valvecover 3/4" on top to raise the engine up a bit more for clearance. In/out a few times with the engine until it all fit nice..

Currently cruising town with 13psi, probably in the 450rwhp area. She scoots and sounds pissed off!

Re: AutoRoc's Turbo Vortec 4200 I-6 Swap

When you mentioned somthing about seeing my car up in Michigan at one time .... Then I looked at your signature... took me twice to see the 4200 and went... Say What? Lol...

I think it's a great swap!

The engines are cheap and tons out there.... I was interested in doing this same swap but into one of our Typhoon's we have. Much more durable than the 4.3L and has much more power potential with better dependabilty.

I'm sure you've seen clips of that old I think 65? Chevy Wagon with the 4200?
Ran in the 9's.... And we know the most that could have been done internally would be pistons and rods.... No heads avalable... no cranks avalable other than stock.

Keep up the good work! I think it has a TON left in it!!!!

I love this thing! I have a thing for Iroc 'verts and this is my favorite color. If you ever plan on selling please PM me.

After my STi out here in Japan with 20lbs of boost I got hooked. It's addicting. I just picked up a GMC Typhoon and a ATI Procharger for my bird

Sick car man, and I can only hope I can get my bird to run as fast as your ride. Thing is quick! What is your end goal? high 10's? Are you running a stock trans?

I'm only out to go 10.99.. Failed these last 2 attempts..It' definately has the power. Maybe this weekend!

Thanks Bullydawg, step sway from the boost!!! It's a rebuilt trailblazer 4L60E, has some good Sonnax parts in it from Detroit Gearbox.

Creative build man. I love people thinking outside the box and having fun building something different. Keep it up!

First gas station visit was funny. A fellow gearhead(mopar guy) asked if it was an LS1 or LT1.. Asked to see the engine bay after I explained it to him... He wanted to say.. "that's F'd up..." But he said "that's.. Different!"

I know this tread is old but is there any pictures of the engine mounts? What transmission is attached?

Re: AutoRoc's Turbo Vortec 4200 I-6 Swap

Hey TG.org folk!!! No real updates on this build. I still drive it on nice days. I put a complete exhaust on it to get rid of cabin exhaust fumes. In the Cat/converter location i installed one of the 3" Dynomax Mufflers with the spring loaded flap inside of it. Then 3" over the axle into my 4" Dynatech race bullet and a hidden 4" tip. This is extremely quiet and cost 2psi of boost which is about a 40hp loss. Of course i can just turn the boost **** up....

Otherwise...i put speakers back into the rear panels and a new pioneer radio which(for a $99 price) has so many features it is scary. It needs a new convertible top and if funds allow, I think I might vinyl wrap the car. Maybe Dark matte grey metallic? Im not sure!

Re: AutoRoc's Turbo Vortec 4200 I-6 Swap

Oh and i take it on road trips, the last long one was to a few of the 2016 HotRod Drag Week stops. UR50SLO (Scott) was there running 8's but looked to have 7 second power. Nice talking to you, I caught you as you were leaving Norwalk.. Having 600hp is a complete joke compared to MOST of those competitors. The amount of 8 second cars impressed me. Sure there were 6 and 7 second monsters but they were few and far between. 8's is the new 10's it seems... When i started driving in 1999, 12's seemed like racecar stuff!!
