Re: 500hp?

Sorry buddy, not gonna happen. Unless you find a good deal on a used LS6 or ZZ502 crate motor, but then, no warranty.

All you're going to get for 5gs and a warranty is a new LS1 and 350HP.

Re: 500hp?

Just trying to help you here. Is there a reason you need 500hp, or just a number off the top of your head?
Just be aware and ready to buy all the other supporting items that go along with 500 hp. It gets stupid expensive. 10-15k is what you need to do it right, esp in Toronto.

Re: 500hp?

Puttting 500HP infront of a stock trans and rear end is a BAD idea (unless you plan on driving it like a grandma and never pushing the throttle more than 1/4 of the way down)

Re: 500hp?

build it yourself, do as much of it on your own and you'll save a lot $. not trying to step on others toes but seems like a lot of people always want to say "it cant be done" do yourself a favor. find a 500hp budget build in car craft or gmperformance.com or any other online site and just follow it. you can do it for under 5k. i agree with the others as far as supporting that motor though. i built my motor which is between 450hp and 500hp(getting dynoed this summer) for about $3700. but i even did some of the machine work myself. as far as supporting that motor lol i'm up to about 9k now lol

Re: 500hp?

kind of a neat article

http://hotrod.automotive.com/63949/h...ild/index.html

If you want 500hp out of a naturally aspirated small block, you'll want to stroke it.

No doubt you can get it done on a budget minded build. Some guys doing amazing things with little to no budget.
For 5 k, one can build a very quick street car using mostly stock equipment. Thats where I would go if budget was a big concern.

Agreed, its just gonna come down to how frugal(hope that's spelled correctly lol) you can be and how much you do yourself. just take your time and think it all out before you start spending money.

Re: 500hp?

but like they said. Be prepared to upgrade the suspension, new rearend, built transmission, full exhaust, upgraded cooling, etc.

Motor alone 5k can get you there. Especially with a well thought out power adder. But expect a couple thousand more to let that power work with the car. If you dont upgrade stuff you wont be happy.

Re: 500hp?

You can certainly build a 500hp small block (383 or 406) for $5,000 just for the engine. But 500hp is going to need a good trans, rear, and exhaust, which is probably another $5,000 in parts.

Re: 500hp?

thanks for your input guys i really appreciate it all! that article is quite neat. im thinking of buying a built bottom end(383 short block assembly?) no replacement for displacement , and yes i do understand the rest of the supporting parts for that engine, this is just for the engine alone, im not dumb enough to use that kind of power on stock.. i was thinking 400-450 would be more suitable for the street, i was thinking trickflow heads, scorpion roller rockers, a demon/holley carb? performer rpm intake, thumpr roller cam, scat rods 2.02 valves? 190cc trickflows?. just not sure of the specs.. and just a built gm bottom end? 5000$ is alone for the engine for all of u wondering.. lol. maybe boost in the future? (means good bottom end) a good stall? proper gearing? should reach my goal. 5000$ is the budget for the engine alone, any and all input/ proven combos would be great! thanks guys!

Re: 500hp?

500+ Hp for under $4000 is easy as pie. Throw away that small block Chevy and go LSx and don't look back.

Your not gonna see an LSx for under 4k if your car isn't already set up for it....trust me.

You're over thinking this. You're not looking to buy a new engine from a shop. You're looking for any good 6.0L LQ9 engine from a Chevy 3/4 or 1 ton truck with less than 100K miles. Do a cam swap, bolt on a Victor Jr. intake with a carburetor, and get an MSD ignition controller to run the factory coil packs. Sell off everything else from the engine that you're not using and buy an F-body front accessory drive and oil pan.

There are 5 words you need to repeat over and over again until you believe it: "I can buy used parts."

LS1tech.com has almost 100% of what you need right now in the classifieds section. I know for a fact there are multiple LQ9 short blocks for sale. There are 2 sets of L92 heads for sale. There are several people parting out Camaro's where you can get the F-body accessory drive and oil pan. There is a brand spanking new Victor Jr. intake for sale. There are several lightly used cams for you to choose from (yes, you can buy a used LSx cam and not have issues). There are several BMR torque arms for sale (4th gen and 3rd gen torque arms are interchangeable). And there are always built transmissions for sale. Right now there are even a few heavy duty driveshafts for sale. Somebody here at thirdgen.org is selling a 4L60E trans crossmember for LSx swap.

Correction: He's not going to see a car that can handle 500Hp for under $4K no matter what engine he chooses. A lot of the things he needs to upgrade on the car to handle 500Hp are the same things needing change for an LSx swap. He's going to be changing those parts one way or the other. It's just a matter of choosing LSx parts vs. SBC parts.

That's basically what I said just with more words. And all of those words being the exact reason I went LSx myself.

The key word here is "warranty" Op stated he wanted either a crate motor or a shop built motor with a warranty, 500hp and under 5K. I would love to see an example of such a motor if it exists and where to get one.

However, I do agree that if you start doing the machine work yourself on a used block and heads and put in your own time and labor it might be possible. But then you forgo the convenience of a warranty.

I guess it all depends on how important a warranty is to you. If you are a skilled machinist and have done this sort of stuff before, you probably will do it right the first time and not need any warranty.

Another interesting side note, in that one article someone posted earlier about a 500hp 5K build, they used a CHP 383 Street fighter block that cost $2300 at that time. Same thing now costs $2800, a 22% jump in price.

http://www.coasthigh.com/Chevy-383-s...cks-s/1222.htm

Makes you wonder how much more some of the other parts are now, so is that particular build still feasible for 5K?
