new to the forum and question
Hey everyone, I'm new the the forum so I apologize if there are tons of responses to the questions I have. I have a 91 Z28 305 TPI. I recently finished rebuilding a 350 and I'm planning on putting it in by next weekend. It's going to be carb'd. My question is do I need any special kind of distributor and carb for this? My plan is getting a HEI distributor and from what I've read I would need one that you can't use a computer on. Is this correct? And for the carb, would any 4 barrel work? Another question I have is about long tube headers. I've read that people have ground clearance problems with them, but I've also heard that some people don't have problems with that. I'm considering Hedman 68460 headers. Does anyone else have these and have any problems with them?
Thanks

Welcome aboard thirdgen.org.
There is a tech article linked from the thirdgen.org homepage about switching from EFI to carb. The tech article is also linked in a sticky in the top section of the Carburetor forum.
Any particular reason why you are converting to carb? I wouldn't, but that's my personal preference. Although I'm a moderator on the Carburetor forum, I have converted (or am converting) everything I own that was once carb to EFI.
Choosing a proper carb, if you really want to go that route, is practically a topic unto itself. More details about your 350 and what you intend to do with the car would be necessary in order to answer that.
The Exhaust forum has a bunch of information about headers, including the benefits and difficulties with using long tubes. You will lose ground clearance with long tubes, no way around that. Whether they are worth it depends again on the details of your 350 and what you plan on doing with the car. Most likely, shorties with good flowing exhaust will be more than sufficient, and without ground clearance problems.

305 and 350 TPI setups are exactly the same, except for the injectors.

Going to the LS platform engines. Two '82 Camaros that came from the factory with carbs now have LS1's. The '57 Bel Air weekend warrior that had a carb'd 396 is getting a stroked LQ4 with better heads. All are driven on the street regularly.
I drove the LS1/4L60E Camaro to a track 200 miles away last Saturday, made eight 1/4 mile passes, ran high-12's with poor traction in 95 degree heat, drove it home, averaged 21.6 MPG for the day. This is the same car I drove to work every day during the winter (and drove to work today).
I'm pretty much sold on EFI.
