New Member, And we are building a 400 + HP Calif Legal motor.
Hi -Sam Here. Just picked up an 86 IROC. 5 speed-no T-tops, no motor. Original idea was to set it up for the Mojave Mile with an 850 horse Small block. But the more we thought about it, we came up with building a 420-430 HP Smog Legal motor and seeing what we can do with that.
Tha car came with sub frame connectors, heavy sway bars, poly bushing kit, Edelbrock Ca legal intake manifold and legal headers.
My Engine builder has a buddy at Lunati cams so we have been working on a cam design to go with our 9.75 CR pistons and 190 CC iron heads. I'll keep you guys informed of how the build is going.
It will be built to pass the visual and sniffer-

Welcome aboard thirdgen.org.
Where/how is your 420-430 HP being measured? Rear wheels? Flywheel (gross or net)?
You could run a computer q-jet on an '86 legally, but you'll have to keep the cam O2-sensor friendly at idle.
This would be a lot easier to do with an LS3, of course.

Yeah I agree with the LS3 comment. But we are up for a challenge. When you pop the hood this is gonna look like the stock motor (mostly)
We are shooting for 420/430 at the crank ( I wish at the wheels)net
We have been working with Lunati for a 0 overlap camshaft with decent lift and duration.
we will not be making tons of revs (5800 or so) but we think we are gonna produce an abundance of torque. I'm not too worried about the Q-jet, my builder has a few tricks.
Thanks for asking

Welcome and good luck, shouldnt be too hard. Theres many already ahead of you on this board that have put down closer to 400whp and few beyond that and still smog legal
Its incredible

This is going to be a challenge. The smog-legal intake manifolds are only good to 5500 RPMs. You're going have to put out 400 ft-lbs at that RPM to make 420 HP. That is going to be quite a challenge.
