383 build, need help

What I have 81 350 4 bolt main block..... was built and bored as a 355 but was took apart by last owner, motor ran great he just wanted it bigger and then sold the truck it was in.

GOAL. Outrun a 94 LT1 Firebird with auto trans, stock rear end, 50 or 100 hp shot of nos and upgraded fuel pump... running street tires on stock wheels.

Other GOAL... Run in the 12s... dont care if its 12.999 <-- just wanna break into the 12s... that will put me into a good spot at the midnight drags.

Need help with 2 different style builds.... one with nos one without. Needs to be able to run on the street, and not on race fuel..
also want to run a lunati cam.... and carbed on both styles.

So thats what im dealing with. also gonna be useing a monster transmissions 700r4 SS kit.

SO i need help on... crank, rods, well

EVERYTHING... for a NON NOS set up... and EVERYTHING for a 200 HP shot of NOS. Thanks guys

Re: 383 build, need help

Stay away from the Monster Trans at all cost, if you drive hard w/ a built motor it will be problematic or just plain break. My car is a low 12 second daily driver when weather permits, their Stage 3 tranny crumpled in 4 mos., w/ only one trip to the strip and two autocrosses. Get a kit from ProBuilt, call them and talk to Dana....

Re: 383 build, need help

I've been hearing more and more bad stuff about monster trans over the last few weeks. Ive always had good luck with there stuff in my dodges... But i have a friend who builds them in house, not pre-built by monster. Was yours a KIT or was it a pre-built unit?

So far i've heard 5 bad storys on pre-builts, and 0 bad storys on the kits

Re: 383 build, need help

Prebuilt, but when we disassembled it we found alot of knock off type parts that were basically junk, I'd go w/ probuilt, when rebuilt it we got all pro-built and trans-go parts, no problems at all w/them. I'd stay away from them....

Re: 383 build, need help

Dont need a 383 to run in the 12's and to beat a Lt1 on 100 shot

Whats your budget and what parts do you have now? heads? intake? What came with the old 355?

If the bottom end is ok on that 355, reuse it. Put on a set of decent heads and one of the lunati voodoo grinds and a good dual plane intake for carbs or a stealth ram type intake for EFI and it will easily go 12's.

Larger cam and better heads with 10 to 1 comp will have a chance at high 11's once you set up the suspension and transmission for it. Stil be streetable but it sounds like you need something abit more mild than that.

For nitrous, get a forged piston if you want to spray larger shots often. If not forged bottom end with strong rods and rod bolts, then keep rpms down below 6200 and shots below 150 hp.
