383 stroker help
383 stroker help
I was told to drop a 383 in my 86 bird and get rid of the 305 because it simply wouldn't have enough output to do what all I wanted to do. I'm looking to build a street/ strip car. My simple question is how do I build a 383 what separates it from a 350, aside from the size... And what parts do I need to buy in order to build it? Any and all feedback is appreciated

Re: 383 stroker help
Summit/Jegs as well as other companies offer stroker kits for what you seek. You will need to acquire a 350cu small block and have it machined for the 383 kit (boring cylinders to 4.030 over and notching the block for connecting rod clearance. You can also order 383 crate motors. You might even be able to find a complete 383 on craigslist or ebay.

Re: 383 stroker help
Im not a fan of rebuilding 305 bottom ends, that's a waste of money. But if the 305 runs fine and doesnt burn oil (ignoring valve seals/start up puff) you can make them REALLY quick.
But you have to be willing to set up the car for it. That means 3.73s, stall converter, cut out weight, awesome exhaust, etc. All that stuff you're SUPPOSED to do before you put the 383 in in the first place.
Had a buddy who went low 12's with a 305 with factory heads on it. Not really much to it. Just slicks, 4.56's, loose stall converter, 280H cam and some bowl-blended 416 heads at a little over 10:1 compression I think.
