Bbc tall block 540 would turn
In my 88 formula I have a 402 big block with edel rpm heads fully balanced and I turn around 8000 grand with a little over 650horsepower now I have a 88 I'm building that I have a set of 320 cc aluminum heads built by a local machine shop that I've already bought but I can buy a 540 tall block all short block minus a crank never been ran if I take it apart and fully balance it with the 320 cv heads and a victor 454r intake a port full Sony guys think I can get 7000 to 8000 rpms out of the motor or am I spitting into the wind and would need bigger size heads to do that

Tall/short deck won't matter.
320 heads are a little small for a 540 especially if you plan on spinning it that high. When I was using 320 heads, my camshaft peaked out around 7600 and I could really feel the car starting to nose over just under there. I swapped out the heads for some ported out Dart 360's and at 7400, it was still pulling hard.
When I upgraded to a 582, nothing else changed about the engine except the displacement. It brought my powerband down a couple of hundred rpm and I only had to shift in the 7000-7200 range.
For 320 heads on a 540, I'd keep the rpms in the low 7000 range.
My new build is a 588 and the new cam grind should bring my shift points back into the mid 7000 range. The larger displacement engines need bigger heads and a bigger cam to reach 8000 rpm.
My new cam is a custom grind

My Dart 360's flow at least 400 cfm at .800 lift. Although there are bigger heads in the conventional design, the best way to get more air flow is by going to a Big Chief style head. Although the 540 worked with the unported 320's, the engine loved the ported 360's

Re: Bbc tall block 540 would turn
I fully ported the heads as good as the machine shop can do and the intake is ported as well I was thinking on using the 320s with a voodoo cam that's 625 lift ext and power band is 3500 to 7200 I plan on driving it on the streets but I thinking with the 320s being on the small side that can would suit it and push probably around 600 power push it to low 11s its either that or building another 402 putting those heads on it and spraying a 2 stage or a turbo cause it's almost impossible to be a 396 or 402 to push 600 naturally asp and like I said my other 402 spins 8000 like its nothing that's with iron 781s with everything done to them
