How much to pay my mechanic to do full swap on his own?

I have a relative who works on cars ALOT. I have full confidence in him to do a v8 swap from my 3.1l 92'bird I just got. I know it's probly easier to just buy the v8 car to begin with.

But if I payed him for his time start to finish (him doing his own searching for parts from the JY with no input from me) how much would be a reasonable pay offer to give him for a complete swap?

He usually will do engine removal and installation for around 300$ just to give u an idea.

So parts ($?)
labor (?)

Most would find to pay for a swap unaffordable.Money between family is a bad idea.

When you consider shop overhead, tools and equipment(yeah the snap-on guys wants to get paid every week),a price range of from (the bottom price is way too cheap)$45.00 to $75.00 a hr isn't unreasonable. And on swaps you leave a estimate open ended because you really don't know if your going to run into problems.
Works out like this.If your mechanic is under equipped working on his back in his car and haft home garage the possibility of the quality of the work not being as good as a full blown shop paying more per hr.My point is you end up in the end of paying more for a under equipped guy in time and maybe the work isn't as good.

There is an engine shop here that will remove, install and set all your settings for $500.

Removing an engine and replacing it with an identical engine is one thing. Putting in a different engine is another story altogether. There are a lot of little differences that you don't expect and remember Murphy's Law says if something can go wrong, it will. And Murphy was an optimist.

Seriously, I'd suggest you do the swap and put your relative's phone number on speed dial on your cell phone. Before you start, have him talk you thru the job, try to figure out the problems in advance, and call him whenever you need advice. And when it's done, you'll have the satisfaction of having (mostly) done it yourself.

dont offer anything, ask him what he wants and pay it or find someone else or do it yourself. Then if he underbids himself its his screw up...

Re: How much to pay my mechanic to do full swap on his own?

As I have not actually done the swap yet I can not give you an idea of price etc. However if I were to give a price it would be with you buying the parts I told you to were needed.
Next question is carbed or EFI when finished. Exhaust done or not? Springs replaced? Will the motor be dropped in straight from JY or freshened up? What about tranny? Is this supposed to be turnkey?
