3.1 to 305 questions
3.1 to 305 questions
My 1990 Camaro has 186,xxx miles on it, and both the engine and auto trans are dying. I picked up a 305 mated to a 700r4 that came out of a 1988 1500 2wd for next to nothing, and I'm hoping there's somebody on here that has swapped in a truck engine who can help me out here as to what I can/should use from both sources. I already know I'm going to have to get a different oil pan and install a fuel pressure regulator (Engine is TBI, I plan on changing to a carbureted setup hopefully without changing the pump). I've already read the sticky thread, and it answered quite a few of my questions. My remaining concerns are with the transmission and accessory drives, I don't know if there's any differences between the Camaro 700r4 and the truck 700r4 or if any accessory drives are compatible. Ideally, I'd want to keep my a/c from the V6, but it wouldn't be a heartbreaker if I get rid of it. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

You will need to swap over the 3rd Gen extension housing off your old trans as well as your speedo gears ( while you have the housing off )

Re: 3.1 to 305 questions
A V6 to V8 swap, if done right, will require a few things. Obviously you'll need the right motor mounts, but you'll need the V8 radiator and the V8 springs. You should probably get the V8 struts too, but those may be less critical. Some have done the swap with the original V6 radiator and V6 springs, but both are less than optimal.
Re: 3.1 to 305 questions
From 82-89 GM built a V6 and V8 radiator. From 90-92 all 3rd gen radiators were the V8 style regardless of engine. He's set for cooling
Swap the in-tank pump for a TBI pump and use a regulator on the carb
Accessories for serp trucks were the same for Fbodys. If its the mix and match V-belt/serp setup some of those mid-year engines has, Id pick up a complete set from the junkyard
Since the AC compressor swaps sides on a V6 vs V8, you'll need a new line and recharge. Theres nothing preventing you from keeping it though, even with a carb setup
As said before, swap the tailhousing from your 700R4 to the truck trans to retain your torque arm mount. You may have to swap the VSS gear over too as i cant remember when trucks went electric
Since you're doing the swap on a stock style engine, why not pick up a 90-92 TBI harness/ECM and keep everything injected? The LO3 was a VERY reliable and surprisingly efficient engine, albeit gutless

Re: 3.1 to 305 questions
U may want to check your springs as I think V6 cars might have been different, although I've read they work 4 V8s for racing. Best wishes
