Welcome aboard thirdgen.org.
Do you have a V8 in the car now? I'll assume so for now.
The L31 EFI system is nothing to write home about. It would be a bit of a hassle to swap it into your car, especially if you have a carb and not TPI. I would recommend just swapping in the long block. Doing so will require getting a Vortec intake manifold for the induction system you have. It is usually also recommended to pull the plastic timing cover and replace it with a "normal" SBC stamped steel cover (your '86 should fit). Your TH700 will bolt up to the engine, but if you try to run the L31 EFI system, you'll run into issues getting the VSS to feed the PCM. Again, a reason not to try to swap over the L31 EFI.
If you currently have a V6, then it will be more work to swap in the L31 (see the V6 to V8 swap sticky in the top section of this forum). For one thing your TH700 won't bolt up to the V8. You'll have the same hassles swapping in the L31 EFI.
