Junk Yard Engine

So I found a local junk yard that told me I could get any 350 in the yard for $350 which includes no core and them pulling it. I want to know what cars would be best when choosing a 350 that would fit my 86' Iroc. I was going to go carbed but I am rethinking and might stick with fuel injection, but that can be changed later. I'm looking for low mileage and plan on tearing it down to check for damage and to replace gaskets. I am afraid to take it out of a firebird or Camaro because they were most likely abused. I was thinking Suburban or a truck as they will be the ones with the lowest mileage.

Re: Junk Yard Engine

Those would be fine, AS LONG AS they're not 95-back. 96-2000 only.

Re: Junk Yard Engine

Things you will need to take under consideration.

'96 and up truck motors are going to most likely be vortec engines so you'll have to find a vortec tpi intake base if you want to keep your tpi. This is what I'm doing with my '87 IROC.

You will probably have to get a new tune since a newer engine is going to have a different cam and head setup compared to the 305 your car came with.

No, those did not appear in trucks until 99.

96-2000 truck 5.7 is the "Vortec" 350. That was the first use of that word for a V8, before it became a mere buzzword that meant nothing more than "any GM engine". As mentioned, the heads on that motor have a completely different intake surface from previous ones, requiring the single-source replacement base in order to retain TPI. (which TPI mostly voids the benefits of those heads anyway) But if you go with a carb, there are plenty of intake choices available. Likewise if you stick with EFI but ditch TPI; the Holley Stealth Ram for example is available to fit them.

Re: Junk Yard Engine

I have no engine or trans in it. Was like that when I bought. I Guess the LS is the popular option?

Re: Junk Yard Engine

If you have nothing to start with, then yes, that's probably the better way to go.
