Harmonic balancer and pulley setup

Harmonic balancer and pulley setup
Doing a engine swap on my 1987 firebird formula and I'm taking out the old slug of a 305. Now the 305 was carbureted with ac and has a different harmonic of the time. Now my question is since I'm putting in a 1973 350 should I use the 305 harmonic or is there one that will work perfectly and if it is smaller and the pulley system needs to be changed what is the best pulley system

Re: Harmonic balancer and pulley setup
Generally speaking the 305 and 350 balancers are neutrally balanced. I would recommend keeping the 350 one from that engine with it as some timing tabs are in a different location on the 305s.
All pulleys should bolt onto the balancer the same you just need the correct pulley for the setup, ie. V-belt or serpentine. If you have access to or the budget for a serpentine setup I would recommend that as would many others. The only downside is changing some of the accessories and a.c. lines for the serp setup since the alternator and a.c. compressor are swapped sides.
I installed a serp setup on my 87 with tpi and like the cleaner look. It is harder to delete/remove the air pump and a.c. if you are going that route but not too difficult.

Re: Harmonic balancer and pulley setup
The harmonic that came for my 350 we shot (rubber was cracked ) the block itself was just the block pistons and crank so since they neutral I can use the 305 one?
and my 305 was running a serpentine system on everything besides the water pump

Re: Harmonic balancer and pulley setup
You would need to check that the timing cover tab is in the same place on the 350 as it was on the 305 to make it easier to check timing in the future, you can use it either way but making sure the timing lines up will save a lot of headaches in the future.

Re: Harmonic balancer and pulley setup
Perfect thank you
one more question and that's it
I'm running headers since my exhaust manifolds would cover up the dipstick hole on the new block well the ac pulley bracket tied into the exhaust manifold and the bracket tied into the power stearing pump. I deleted the ac pulley already but I don't think that the bracket will clear the headers how should I go about that
