400hp sbc build recipe?
400hp sbc build recipe?
I am trying to replace a ticking 327 from a 1968 GMC pickup that once was my Dad's. He has passed on and the truck has sat for years. It's HD everything as per factory order and I would like to put 400hp back under the hood and from a sbc 350 without stroking it. I know hot rodders have been doing this kinda things for years, so, anyone have a magic recipe build to accomplish 400hp from a 350 without stroking the motor?

350 roller cam block
Fresh vortec heads
224/230 comp hyd roller or lt4 hotcam.
Performer rpm dual plane
Very popular setup

Thank you for the reply. I’ve been hearing about that setup since I’ve been asking in one form or another. Some with bigger cams and alloy heads and milder with the Vorteks. Thank you again!

Re: 400hp sbc build recipe?
400 rear wheel horsepower or 400 horsepower at the crank? I don't see a 350 with Vortecs and a the old LT4 Hot cam making 400 horsepower at the rear wheels. I ran a very similar combo and this is what I got on a Mustang Dyno:
Horsepower was 322 at about 5,850 RPM
Torque was 308 at about 4,000 RPM
I have read/heard that the Mustang Dynos are known to read low, some local people have told me it was probably more like 350-360 horsepower and about the same for torque.
The engine itself was built by me a several years back
355 4 bolt main vortec block
Keith Black Hypereutectic Pistons around 10:1 CR
Trick Flow Heads I ported
1.6 aluminum roller rockers
LT4 "Hot" cam
Accel single plane EFI intake
1200 cfm 4 barrel progressive throttle body
Bosch III 30 lbs/hr injectors
AFPR set at 43 psi
Hooker Super Competition Headers (1.75 to 3")
MegaSquirt 3 Extra Engine Management Controller
You might consider how much you will spend on creating this old school sbc engine and the power it will create vs making the switch to the LS world where you can just go to a wrecking yard and pull a truck 5.3 and make 400 hp easily with just a cam swap and exhaust. Usable Vortecs usually go for ~$500, machine work another $500, Rotating assembly can be $500-2000, cam $200, Intake, carb and ___??? You might be looking at $2000 for this engine.
I'd try to find a built, used engine for under $2000 as anything over that and you could have swapped to LS.

Re: 400hp sbc build recipe?
So after a week of looking and learning about SBC's I found almost exactly what I was looking for at Blue Print Engines. I believe they are a sponsor here. It's a 355 cid 390hp/450lbs of torque. 10to1's, roller cam, aluminum heads. I won't bore ya with the spec's here, but summit carries it. I'm about to go to their website and order a laundry list of things. Thanks to everyone who pitched in their info, you guyz ROCK, especially since I've been talking about my Dad's old truck on a 3rd Gen site.
