I have to many choices if thats possible im thinking of buying a 86 Camaro for $1200 4bbl stock i want to know if i should keep that engine and mod it and maybe rebuild it or i can get a cheap 350 from advanced auto and mod it or i know i guy that builds engines and i think he can get me a cheap 350 block i can build myself im only 16 ive never built a engine before but i know 2 mechanics that are drag racers that can help me.Or i can get a 350 Vortec realy cheap i think i come from a late model truck though.i can prob get 3k worth of parts from advance auto cuz my dad works there and can get me a discount i realy want to hit at least 13's maybe even 11's i would prob. use nos I realy need any help you got this will be my first car and i want to have it for a long while anything will help cuz im realy

No one else offered, I've got a few thoughts.
First, your goals. 13's are serious stuff. 11's - whole different ball game. Have you done any racing? If not, then you need to work your way there. Those 17-year-olds you see on TV going 200 mph grew up in that stuff. Most of us mere mortals, on the other hand...
Having said that, I'd recommend starting with the 305. It'll respond to all of the typical hop-up techniques used on any SBC. It's a good place to learn what makes an engine tick. A 350 can follow later, and nearly all of what you did to the 305 will transfer over.
Not so with the Vortec, though. Takes different stuff. Expensive stuff. Do-able, but not necessary.
