Small Block Fuel Line
Small Block Fuel Line
Hi Guys! I've got another question and was hoping to get some input. I'm gonna be dropping my small block into place, where a 2.8 V6 formerly resided. I am planning on running -8 Braided Line from the tank to the mechanical fuel pump. I am curious as to how some of you might have plumbed a new line into your fuel tank. Does anyone else feel that the stock fuel line may be a little on the small side to support 400 HP plus? I contemplated simply running a regulator with the "in tank" fuel pump, to reduce the fuel pressure, but I just couldn't talk myself into it. So, I decided to go ahead with the larger fuel line and a fabricated pick up instead. Am I wasting my money????? My engine should produce somewhere in the neighborhood of 450 HP and 500 FT/LBS of torque at around 6500 RPM, according to my Desktop Dyno program. Thanks in advance.
You'll never feed 450+ HP with the stock pickup and just a block-mounted fuel pump. It may be able to get the job done in higher gears where acceleration has tapered off considerably. But coming off the line in lower gears the G-forces of acceleration will almost definitely cause fuel pressure to drop off. It will be bad enough to cause the engine to stumble at the top of 1st and maybe 2nd gear.
I got around this in my 78 Malibu by installing a low pressure booster pump (Carter 5 PSI street pump) back by the tank and a high volume mechanical pump up on the engine (Carter 6 PSI). Has worked well into the high 11s.
