Upgrading a TBI system to TPI

Hi all,

I've got a question. I did a search, as I'm sure there's a small group of knowledge on this subject already, but nothing came up...

Anyway, I'm looking on info on upgrading a TBI system to TPI. I've read about people doing this with trucks and there's one post about this being done with back-to-back dyno testing. My idea is to use the existing TBI harness and convert it to a TPI system.

Can anybody lead me in the right direction to research this point? Any good links, email lists, threads here on the board, etc?

One additional question, while I'm thinking about it: Was the TBI a speed-density sytem?

thanks
Clem

Can anybody here help me?

I'm looking for info on swapping over induction parts and making the TPI work in a car originally equipped with a TBI

thanks
Clem

Depends on how complete a TPI setup you can get and what year it is, and the year of the car that it's going into.

TBI is speed density.

You'll need: the intake base, runners, plenum, and basically everything attached to them. The computer and wiring harness and the sensors and relays attached to it. Fuel pump needs to be replaced with the high-pressure version. Need the longer throttle cable and TV cable.

The rest is just details. The proper air ducts are nice to have. TPI cars came with a slightly higher-stall torque converter than TBIs, because if it's higher powerband. Not having that will detract from the swap's full potential, but like I said, is just a detail.

Let me reclarify,

I'm looking for info on how to swap a TBI system over to TPI without swapping out the entire harness. I'm planning on doing this in a non thirdgen vehicle...namely a caprice or a full size truck.

I know this can be done. DynoDon has done it. He basically pioneered his own setup it sounds like. I'm just looking for info on the setup. Any links or email lists...anything like that.

If it was a thirdgen, it'd be a no-brainer. Duh, swap out the stuff and drive. But since it's not, I'd like to utilize the car/truck's factory harness.

It's just in the thought stages right now though

Thanks for the help,
Clem
