Can you make a factory style bolt together exhaust joint?
Can you make a factory style bolt together exhaust joint?
I figure everybody knows the exhaust system joint style used by GM, SLP, and Hooker on the Super Comps (Using a two bolt connection and a donut gasket). Can those of us who are not in the exhaust system manufacturing business make joints like that? I know I could use standard header collectors to make a bolt together connection, but would rather make an OEM style one. So, if it can be done, where can you get the clamp parts, and how would you flare the tubing?
Actually, now that I think about it, I think the flare is actually a flared collar welded to the OD of the exhaust tubing, creating a sort of groove for the donut gasket to sit in. Hmmm....

Hey, this is a hot topic! Well, I went and looked to see how it is done. The actual pipe is flared, and then about a 1/2 inch section of pipe is welded inside the flared out section. So, I'm looking for a way to flare exhaust pipes, and a source for these type things (yes, I pirated that pic from Mohammed):

I think your best bet is going to be to take the pipe you want flared to an exhaust shop and have them flare the end for you. They could probably even put the other piece in there for you.
What kind of headers are you using anyway?
Just a side note, I personally don't like that kind of connection because from what I have heard, and kinda seen, they are a pain to get apart. I like the style that is on the catalytic convertor where there is a ball type joint. The Mustangs have that type of setup. Much easier to deal with. Anyway...that is all I have. later

I'm looking to copy the connections on the SLP headers/y-pipe for other joints in a cat back system in order to make it bolt together. I've pretty much decided that my best bet would be to use regular 3" header reducers. Any ideas on where to find stainless ones?

Those would work OK if I cut them short enough to match up to a 3" pipe. I really need 3" collectors/reducers. I'm trying to make bolt together connections in 3" stainless exhaust tubing, using all stainless components if possible.
I might have to change my plans and use clamps or weld it solid.
Update :
Summit lists a 3" to 3" stainless steel collector/reducer in their paper catalog, but not on the website. Maybe they stopped carrying them. I'll figure it out once I'm ready to buy and give them a call.
