When you can't pull hills you normally used to pass traffic on, lol.

When you notice a ticking sound from the engine bay or under the car.

The smell of fuel when you're not even really on the throttle that hard.

Cutting out and hesitation when you attempt to drive aggressively whatsoever.

Possible top end engine damage and carbonation of the engine (pull a plug out and look for black buildup)

Car fire due to prolonged driving the car with bad cats due to the intense heat created by this misfortune.

If in question, simply gut that puppy out till ya can buy a performance replacement.

How does one go about gutting the cats? I have keep thinking of making jack-o-lanterns , when "gut the cat" is said

You take off the y-pipe/cat converter assembly, take a heavy bar or chisel and hammer, and carefully proceed to breaking apart all the internals inside the catalytic converter, paying attention to not damage the air tube leading into the cat (if so equipped). Once you break up all the materal (do not leave anything inside, gut it completely out), reinstall it on your car. You can do a check with the cat off the car to ensure that heat shield isn't going to vibrate and drive you buggy before reinstall, but not a requirement. This will reduce heat, backpressure, and should increase performance quite a bit, if the old one was clogged badly. Hope this helps..
