Header Installation/ 2 bolt holes on factory exhaust and 3 with headers
I've purchased a cheap set of headers, long story short, I am only going to use them for about 6 months, after which I won't be able to use on my new engine.
Anyhow, the factory exhaust has of course 2 bolt holes, and the headers come with 3....what gives?????
Please help.
Also, it appears that while I've had the exhaust manifold off, almost a week now, that the exhaust has risen. It's a pain to push back down. Any suggestions. Yes it is definately higher than before....

I think you're not getting answers cuz noone has any idea what you're asking...i sure don't.
Do you mean the manifolds had a 2 bolt flange to the y, and your headers have a 3 bolt flage? If so, that is normal, and i don't know what you were thinking anyway. You can't use headers with the stock Y-pipe.
If you meant it has extra holes in the head flange ...????
If you meant you noticed the head has extra holes in it that the header could bolt to, again, normal, early style SBCs used different exhaust manifold bolt patterns than later ones, yet a lot of heads have both sets of holes.
And the exhaust has risen...uhh, what part has risen where? This makes no sense.

Ed,
You're right, my post didn't make any sense, I apologize. It was very late and I was tired. I did mean the flange bolts.
I was unaware that I couldn't use my stock Y pipe with headers, I wasn't thinking anything since I am new to these cars. All of my previous experience came on turbo deisel engines and Volkswagen Bugs, so this is all new for me.
There is a saying, you pay for all education, whether you pay an institution money, pay by learning the hard way, or pay money by spending money before learning all of the facts.....you pay for everything you learn.
So answer me this.....when I get a custom Y pipe made, how much can I look to spend, and what do I need to do?
I'd imagine I'll have the muffler shop install the headers while they are at it correct?
I have no idea since I've never done anything like this before.
Thanks again,
