Dumb exhust shop welded up my air tube!!!!

Last year I had a new cat put on because my old one was clogged up. I guess they were too lazy do it right. With it welded shut is it going to hurt my car. Also what exactly does that little tube do.

It may cause the smog pump to drag more on the engine since it's pumping against a plug, so I would disable the pump until you get that fixed. I guess it's possible that you could ruin the smog pump, which isn't cheap. I have also heard that removing the AIR system causes the cats to plug, but I have yet to remove my cats and validate that. It simply injects fresh air into the manifolds and cats to burn off excess fuel in the exhaust, so if the car is running rich it makes sense that the cats would clog/meltdown inside. I would look into fixing it or removing the AIR system whenever you get the chance. Probably best to get it fixed with a new piece of tubing. Hope this helps.

... according to the other post, your new cat will quickly become clogged and you'll have to change it again ....

cut it off, make it open. the little tube will pump out air into the air (instead of the cat since its not connected) and that will only serve to increase performance if ANYTHING, since it cant hurt performance. then again, this is advice for somone with a hollow cat, like mine. this is what ive done to mine (cut the little air tube thing off) att he recommendation of a bunch of people and its fine been fine.
