aftermarket cat vs. a gutted one

i know the price differnence here, but i would like to know that if i replace my cat with something from summit, would i notice an increase, or should i gut it and run a pipe thru it instead??

thanks

A gutted cat is always better because there is more flow but the problem with a gutted cat is that your car most likely will not pass emissons.A low restriction cat from Summit of course would be better because it would have a little more flow than the stock converter but I do not think you would be able to tell the difference except "maybe" a little more noise from the exhaust.but depending on the after market converter, it still might not pass emissions because it lets out more stink.

Get the highflow Catco, it's cheap and it passes emissions. An article in a gearhead mag last year showed that third gen's needed some back pressure to help them go faster. For some reason this isn't so true for the 4th gen's, go figure.

peace...

P.S. I ran my car stock and added the Dynomax Super Turbo and the Catco and gained 3 seconds. The stock cat was toast (read gutted but not cleaned) I'm the second owner of course.

I've heard some bad things about Catco in another post. Anyone have experience w/ a Dynomax cat? Anyone got the part # for one that will work on a 2.8, 2.5" in and out?

I have a catco. don't have anyproblems but I don't know how it flows. I would never gut a cat. I would just buy the offroad pipe. if you have emissions you will fail them anyway. if you do have emisions I would just nut up and buy a random cat. then you will no for sure that the cat is not too restrictive.

Regarding the Dynomax high flow cats. They are good, and not too pricey. Only one problem though. If you have dual cats you will have clearance and installation problems. The Dynomax high flow cats are bigger than stock, well at least mine were. And the place that I had the cats installed said it wouldnt fit so they installed one in the position that it was suppose to be in and the other at an angle which caused me to lose about almost 2 inchs of clearance. They told me that it was the only way to install them. But I did some measurements and they do fit. So I had them redo it. Of course they were reluctant and wanted to charge me but I didnt pay cause they did a bad install. Its just that you will have to cut a little more of the exhaust piping to fit both cats. You will also have to do a lot of test fitting before you actually weld it on. In terms of power I think they made a difference. I never dynoed my car before or after to actually say.
Best of luck
