mannerly idle, nice roar at WOT. sleeper mentality. i'm looking to be decently fast, but i don't need a 10 second car. something that has plenty of power to drive every day and still be streetable.

after the exhaust i'm looking at a rebuild, probably with the World 305 Torquers, and a healthy cam... i'm not clear on everything yet since i'm still learning.

edit : even though i don't have to worry about it in florida i'd like to keep the cat; i want a 305, perfectly street legal everywhere that can still lay down the smack

I would say the Flowmaster F2 exhaust system, or a Flowmaster 50 Series, which should not be loud at idle, and interior resonance, but sound best at acceleration and WOT instead of always being loud.

no single exhaust can match the quality of a true dual set up, but if you have to stay single, the Borla catback sounds real good, but it costs twice as much as the others.

even though I'm bitter with borla,I'd highly recomend it,just try to get one over the counter so you can return it if it's a screwed up as mine is(I lost my reciept too,so I'm very bitter!) it is an awsome system though, still looks like it does when I bought it (it won't rust)except for the tips I've nailed hundreds of times , you could afford to get headers and a high flow cat if you get the cheapies like headman 1 5/8" shorty's w/Y-pipe (which are actually really good headers if you can keep the rust away) and a generic high flow 3 way cat from JC whitney. you can get that all for $800 and put it in yourself. before I had a cat in,I ran it straight piped,it sounded fantastic!!! and I pulled away from a salem,NH cop pretty fast with the plate open, advanced timing, and +4 plugs, back then it seemed like the right thing to do,because I was getting my license back the next day

Yeah, the Borla sounds real good, and with the adjustability, you can pretty much make it as loud as you want. That way you can keep it quiet around town, and at the track, open that baby up!!

SLP. All stainless steel. Sounds stock at idle and cruising. Past 3k though, it's all *****.

It also has the gurantee to outflow any other exhaust for our cars
I only paid $350 compared to Borlas rediculous $525 price.

I have a applied tech all stainless 3" catback. Nice low rumble screams at WOT. Looks stock, but sounds like a big Block.
My exhaust is under the quicktime movie.

i'll ask this question up front : how loud before you get a ticket? around here the motorcycles every year are SO LOUD i can't imagine getting a ticket for it. if this is a stupid question, sorry, i really don't know.

back to the tech part. is the SLP system cat back (i'd still need to buy headers)? and what about the applied tech system? and which SLP system would i want to order? they have quite a few on their site. hopefully it has dual outs instead of the one side pipe

another question : are powder coated headers just as durable as stainless? friend of mine recommended i go with power coated if i'm not concerned with looks (i'm not) because they won't rust, and last just as long (and they're cheaper). his dad has a '70 El Camino SS that's had a set of powder coated headers on them for fifteen years and he says they don't leak and haven't rusted (or leaked).

thanks for all the help so far.

I've witnessed groups of bike riders cruising around town and never saw any of them get a ticket....I wouldn't worry about noise unless you live in a town where they are REAL strict about it.

Coated headers not only look nice, but greatly improve the x-fer of heat away from the engine. cooler engine = more power

the slp is driverside exit but a nice kit. I have one clutering my garage brand new still in the box. $325 shipped. this would save you at least $50. then buy the headers and cat.

does the borla have pipes running into the muffler, and pipes totally by-passing the muffler?

Hhmm $800 huh? For what you want, I would go with the SLP cat back and get the SLP headers at the same time with your left over money.

Powder coating headers won't make them as durable as stainless steel.

Don't settle for anything less than stainless steel.

ok, what i've looked up in their (SLP's)catalogue :

Part #31008 Exhaust System, 1986-89 HO 4bbl/87-89 TPI W/3"Cat 2 Bolt F-Car ($349.95)

and

Part #30000 Headers, 1 5/8" 1982-92 Camaro/Firebird 1 Cat W/ A.I.R. ($450)

does this sound like the right combination? '88 305, TPI equipped. i'm retaining my pollution controls. those are the stainless headers; stainless + ceramic coating is $600! also, the catalogue doesn't mention, does anybody know if the headers come with the Y-pipe? and, do they have a spot for the 02 sensor?

man. last question, i swear the catalogue also mentions part #31013 is the same exhaust, just with dual/dual, instead of driver side exit. yet, it isn't in the catalogue. i suppose this is a question to ask them; but does anybody have it to confirm it's exsistence?

btw, thanks for the offer on the unopened exhaust, but i'd rather get it from them and retain the warranty. thanks though. i don't have the cash on hand immediately anyways; this is a planning thing. thanks for all the help!

yes the headers come with a y-pipe. they have a provision for an 02 sensor. as far a dual exit for a thirdgen I have never seen it but you could call them. as for the exhaust offer I still have the reciet from summit so warranty would not be an issue. I was supposed to return it and I got lazy. just trying to save you some $$$

Unless the deadline has passed, there is a Group Purchase for SLP headers, something like $375.00 w/air. If you can swing it, get the SLPs. You don't need to get them coated, but it helps with heat transfer.

my setup cost me 50 bucks, i did it in about 2 hours, and it sounds a bit louder than a flowmaster cat back for a truck at idle and it screams(and i mean SCREAMS) at WOT above 2500RPM.....i love it, it turns some heads....even just a little romp on the throttle i scared 2 of my buddies cause all they heard was whawhomp! then heard me take off(i hit it hard tehn backed off then hit it again) it is surprisingly tame at idle and surprisingly loud at WOT

I would not worry about a tickett unless your cops are very pickey. If you are driving down the street reving you will probally get a tickett. But as long as you cant hear your exhaust 2blocks away like some Big trucks have you should be ok with whatever system you use.
