Can't pass smog
Can't pass smog
Hello all
I might be buying an 89 IROC with a 406.
Just one problem it wont pass smog at all in Cali
But it doesn't have any smog equip. Just wondering, anyone think if I put a catalytic converter on each pipe and a smog pump on if it will pass smog. Anyone know how I could get it to pass smog. Also anyone know how much it would cost to get the whole smog system on it.
Thanks

Here's some useful advice.
I am sure that if you put cats on the exhaust it would help. Did they tell you how much the car is not passing by? If you don't have any smog equipment, its going to be expensive and time consuming to put it all on. Do the exhaust manifolds/headers have AIR ports? If so, you can probably find some AIR tubes and a smog pump at a junk yard and hook it. Along with the cats, and maybe some engine tuning, that should help you pass. If it doesn't have any ports for the AIR, you are SOL.

It all depends on how efficient your engine is. I know a guy who almost passed with a gutted cat. He barely failed. He put a new cat on and passed with ease. Try putting new plugs in and possibly putting some Heet into your gas tank. Cats will also help a whole bunch too. Also, make sure your engine is nice and warm when you go in there. Drive around a little before you take the test. Hope this helps.

The big thing in CA would be getting to pass the visual. It depends on how **** the smog tech is. You could install a couple of cats and pass the sniffer all day but if he doesn't find your AIR tubes or it's not hooked up correct he can fail you. Plus you can't just throw on some cats...they must be in the original position as OEM or it is considered "tampering" with emissions equipment. It just really depends on how **** the guy will be. I suggest going to some podunk smog center, they're usually easier to let you pass.
Like Dan said, I'd put on a couple of stock exhaust manifolds and all the AIR tubing from a junk car along with a y pipe and a good cat and make it *look* legal. That should get past most inspectors.
Of course, if you have a lumpy cam in that 406 and your smog levels are way up there none of the visual stuff is gonna matter anyway.

register the car with a p.o. box or friend outside of the city. i have heard this works. also, trip permits last for 6 months and dont require passing emmissions.
