Air pump removal how-to??
I decided to remove the AIR pump, since I don't have to pass emissions certifications, and want to remove weight and clutter from my '90 RS 305/auto.
I already got the belt I need, but checking under the hood, I don't know how is the air pump actually mounted. I can only see one bolt at the rear (that I think holds the A/C compressor).
Where are the air pump mounting bolts? do I need to remove the 3 bolts that hold the pulley in place to gain access to the ones holding the pump?
My A/c is not cooling anything, I think it ran out of R12 coolant. Can I remove the lines at the back of the compressor, to tilt the compressor up and gain more room to work when removing the air pump? how do I know if there's pressure still in the compressor lines?
Thanks for your help,
Thunderboy

Thanks man, I'll try it as soon as I get home (I rode on my bike to work so the engine will be cool!)

BE careful! I broke 3 t-45 size torx bits trying to take that pump off. Make sure you have bits with a replacement warranty on them! Mine didn't, the craftsmans were sold out so I had to get the cheaper one.

Thanks guys,
I finished saturday at noon.... thing is noooobody told me the pump was held on with torx bolts...
anyway, I got it all out, I can almost see my right valve cover now!! (got to remove some heater tubes)
Removing the air fittings on the manifolds were the toughest part, because there is almost no clearance, specially on the right side. I applied WD-40 the day before, and right before starting to loosen the fittings. In some cases, I used a hacksaw, to cut through the tube, so I could slip a closed end wrench. I got some plugs at a store that sells all kinds of fittings, and used a 12-point 12mm. cup to tighten the square headed plugs in place (no room for a crescent wrench there).
Hey man, no wonder you broke some T-45 bits....mine were T-40's! I had to remove the A/C compressor and ended up removing the whole cast aluminum bracket, to get the pump off (the bottom pump bolt didn't want to come off the easy way). The two bottom bracket bolts, near the water pump hose, are also Torx, so I removed them as well and replaced them with hex-headed bolts, so it will be easier to remove next time.
I will weight all the components I removed, and post it here, so anybody attempting to do this, will know how much weight can be removed. The car is running fine so far
Now I'm thinking of removing the complete A/C system, already have sketches for a tensioner pulley bracket and adjuster.... but I'll try to see if the A/C can be recharged and works first. If not, I'll axe it! Year long temp here is aroung 70's anyway!!
Thanks everybody
