If you wanted to, you could take out the stock muffler and replace it with a correct length glasspack. If you want it to sound good, and not cheap/crappy, you'll want to get Dynomax/Thrush glasspacks. Others (like cherry bombs) get narrow in the center, hurt flow, and rot out really quickly.
Another idea I have, and what I was planning, was to get the cheap full length Hedman headers, and bolt on some header glasspacks (Thrush or Purple Hornies). I could use a Z connector that is advertized in Jegs if I was hitting the tranny. I'd just use turndowns to direct it out the sides, and maybe run side exhaust pipes if clearance was good. Anybody else tried this?

Glass packs sound best on seperate pipes. They each will have different pulse timing than the other and that is what makes them sound so cool.
I used to have a 65 Merc Comet (ie. Ford Fairlane) that had one GP behind a 289cid. It sounded pretty good for what it was. I think the fact of having such a small engine helped to keep the thing from loading up and sounding like crap though.
Later on though, I had an 81 Malibu with that little 267cid/V8. It had dual GPs off the stock ex. mans. and it sounded great. If done right, GPs will sound good. Just my 2¢.
If you are planning on changing the muffler no matter what, then just get a GP and slip it on there without clamping it down, and listen to it like that. I did that many times just to get an idea if it would sound good. Then if I no like, I take back!!!!
